Uniform Information

Concert Attire

Students will be fitted for and issued tuxedo pants and jacket OR a black dress

Tuxedos: Students must supply their own white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black socks, and black dress shoes.

Dresses: Students must supply their own black stockings/socks and CLOSED-TOE dress shoes. Jewelry and fragrances (perfume/cologne) may NOT be worn during performances. The only exception is for earrings that do not hang past the ear lobe.

Students are responsible for hemming their own skirts/pants to the appropriate length, but they may NOT cut off any fabric from the bottom of the skirts to do so. Dresses and tux pants should be hemmed 1 inch from the ground with shoes on. Use a simple whipstitch or blind hem stitch, taking tiny tucks to ease in fullness. Do not sew the hem by machine or iron-on tape. Remember, do NOT cut the skirt, dress or tux pants off at the bottom to shorten. Do not iron skirts, dresses or tuxes with a hot iron--the material will melt/burn!

All uniforms are professionally cleaned and pressed at the end of each school year. Your orchestra fee covers the cost. Students, however, are responsible for the proper care of their outfits during the year. Students will be responsible for paying a replacement fee for Items that are damaged due to neglect or misuse. Replacement costs (including tax and shipping) are as follows:

Dress: $70

Pants: $40

Jacket: $65

Some students opt to purchase a dress/tuxedo of their own because they know they will be in orchestra for at least 3 - 4 years. For more information on how to purchase the dress/tuxedo we use at GHS, click the link at the top of the page.

Each student should obtain a pair of black dress shoes. Black tennis shoes, slippers or boots are not acceptable. All shoes should be closed toe and 100% black. Black socks are required for the boys and black hosiery for the girls. Knees highs for the girls are permitted. Your performance uniform will be checked prior to each concert.

Students will be asked to turn in their uniforms after the final concert of the year. The GHS Orchestra Boosters will take care of all washing/dry cleaning of uniforms over the summer break. If your uniform needs to be cleaned during the year, please note these instructions:

Cleaning instructions: Girls, you may wash your dresses in the washing machine using a “Delicates” setting. Use a low setting for a dryer, and remove from dryer damp and hang to dry to avoid wrinkles. DO NOT IRON. Boys, your tuxes should be dry-cleaned only.
