Revision can feel like a really daunting task, especially when you have learned as much as we have in the short 3 terms we have together! Therefore it is vital that revision have some structure and focus, not just aimlessly re-covering material.
Here you will find a revision guide which will hopefully give your revision some routine and structure.
YOU WILL NOTE THAT THERE ARE 3 SECTIONS.
FOR EACH SECTION THERE WILL BE A QUESTION FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM IN THE EXAM. THE QUESTIONS SACE WILL ASK CAN ONLY RELATE TO THE TOPICS UNDER EACH SECTION.
FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE FIRST SECTION "THE LIBERAL EXPERIMENT" THE QUESTION CAN ONLY RELATE TO THE 3 TOPICS:
ECONOMIC CONDITIONS
POLITICAL THREATS
CULTURE AND SOCIETY
Key Area 1 , The Liberal Experiment
Key Area 2, The Road to Dictatorship.
Key Area 3, The Nazi state in peace and war.
Key Area 1: The Weimar Republic
I feel that the question in the Exam related to Key Area 1 is the most contained. That is, the focus of the Exam question is limited and is the best area to focus on.
This area is dominated by the successes and failures of the Weimar Republic. Two things to remember here:
The Republic came to power with the baggage of the Treaty of Versailles and the shame of defeat along with little experience of democracy
It was at best a compromise between the far left and the far right. That the Republic survived for so long against all the odds (think Putsch and Hyperinflation) tells us that it was a more resilient government than it is given credit for. For the right wing the alternative was possible revolution and civil war similar to the Russian experience barely a year before.
It was not all bad during the time of the Republic. Think of the "Golden Years' of culture and relative political and economic stability from 1924 - 1929
Consider the impact of Stresseman
Consider the "Grand Coalition" he put together
Think about the state of the Weimar Government on the eve of the Great Depression. Stresseman dies, the political stability collapses, the Great Depression arrives and the Government does not know what to do except balance the budget which appears harsh and uncaring to many Germans.
NOTE: the term "Golden Years" refers to the economic, political and social stability of the period between 1924 and 1929 not just the cultural renaissance.
Key Area 2: The Rise of the Nazis
Will most likely focus on how a relatively small party like the Nazis came to power in 1933?
Think about how the Nazis were received i.e. as savours from the economic instability of the Great Depression.
Which groups supported them?
What weaknesses in the Weimar Constitution created the circumstances for the Nazis obtaining power?
Once in power how did they turn a democracy into a dictatorship? Think about the Enabling Act and the plotting by the Nazis and Hindenburg around the Chancellorship
Key Area 3: The Nazi state in peace and war
This is perhaps the most extensive section of the course and the most difficult to predict regarding possible exam questions.
First focus is on how successful were the Nazis in government.
Did they fix the economy?
Did they spread their ideology throughout the German society?
Second focus is on the experiences of German during the war
Third focus is the internal and external opposition to the Nazis which led to their defeat
Fourth focus is on the Nuremberg Trials, the Division of Germany and the Berlin Airlift.
