Students have the opportunity to choose from three categories when deciding to write an Extended Essay in English B/Language Acquisition.
Students are strongly advised to revise the Language Acquisition Extended Essay markscheme BEFORE making a final decision.
It is important for a student to be confident that they could achieve top marks based on the category and EE question they choose!
CATEGORY 1: LANGUAGE
The essay should be a specific analysis of the language (its use and structure), normally related to its cultural context or a specific text. See pages 128 for example Category 1 EE questions in the Language Aquisition (English B) EE Guide: here.
CATEGORY 2: CULTURE AND SOCIETY
The focus of this category is a socio-cultural analysis of the impact of a particular issue on the form or use of the language. There are two options to undertake in this Category 2; Option A or option B.
CATEGORY 2A: Essays of a socio-cultural nature about the impact of a cultural change on language. The essay should consist of a cultural analysis the impact of a particular issue on the form or use of the language. See pages 128 for example Category 1 EE questions in the Language Aquisition (English B) EE Guide: here.
CATEGORY 2B: Essays of a general cultural nature based on specific cultural artifacts. The essay should be an analysis of a more general cultural nature but be specific to a country or community where the language is spoken. Topics that are too broad and could apply to many cultures (such as globalization, the death penalty or eating disorders) are inappropriate. Essays of a general cultural nature must be based on specific cultural artifacts. See pages 129 for example Category 1 EE questions in the Language Aquisition (English B) EE Guide: here.
The focus of this category is an analysis of a literary type, based on a specific work or works of literature exclusively from the target language (written in English and published in an Anglophone country). In the case of a comparision of texts, all texts must originally been written in the target language (English). See pages 130 for example Category 1 EE questions in the Language Aquisition (English B) EE Guide: here.
