Every retail activation needs an operating model: a clear view of who helps the shopper and when. The choice affects staffing, interface design, training and how you handle problems. Decide it early, because it changes almost everything else.
Brand ambassadors invite shoppers in, help them through the experience and explain the next step. This model suits complex products and unfamiliar interactions, and it lets staff read the shopper and adapt. It depends heavily on good briefing, sensible staffing levels and a clear process for escalating issues.
Brief ambassadors on the product, the journey and common questions.
Give them a short script for the opening line, not a long pitch.
Agree who they call if hardware fails or a customer complains.
Shoppers discover and complete the journey on their own. This needs less floor support but asks a lot of the design. Instructions, interface and physical layout must be exceptionally clear. Plan how you will handle stalled sessions, misuse, accessibility needs and shoppers with questions when nobody is standing beside the screen.
Self-service runs during quieter periods, and staff step in at peak times or for selected steps such as reward hand-over. It offers flexibility, but ownership still has to be explicit. Technology does not remove the need for active floor management.
How complex is the product, and how much explanation does it need?
How long will shoppers typically stay in this location?
What are the busiest periods, and what happens to queues then?
What does the landlord or store allow in terms of staff and footprint?
Who resets the station, restocks materials and cleans screens during the day?
Whatever the model, write a short operating procedure: opening checks, reset steps, what to do if connectivity drops, and who makes decisions during live operation. Share it with every person on the floor, including relief staff.
