Before anyone talks about screens, tablets or apps, map the shortest believable path from a shopper noticing the activation to completing it. If you cannot describe that path in a few plain sentences, the activation is not ready.
What makes a passing shopper stop? A striking visual, a clear promise or a staff member's invitation.
What should they understand at once? One line that explains what to do and why.
What action should they take? Explore a range, answer a quiz, scan a code or register for a programme.
What do they get in return? A recommendation, a sample, an offer or a memorable experience.
How does it end? A clean finish that frees the space for the next shopper without confusion.
Touchscreen experience: good for browsing a range or comparing products.
Digital quiz: useful for guiding shoppers to the right product, as long as each question serves a purpose.
Guided product selector: suits categories where choice is confusing, such as skincare or electronics.
QR-led mobile journey: lets shoppers continue on their own phone, which helps in tight spaces.
Retail spaces are noisy, bright and crowded, and shoppers are often holding bags or children. Keep text large, steps few and touch targets generous. Avoid relying on sound. Test the journey with people who have never seen it, standing up, in conditions as close to the real venue as you can manage.
A journey that ends abruptly, or leaves a half-completed screen for the next person, damages the experience. Decide what the shopper sees at the end, what they take away and how the station resets. If a reward is involved, make sure the hand-over is quick so queues do not build.
