An atrium looks like open floor, but you are renting a defined footprint under the centre's terms. Every mall sets its own rules, so always read the specific licence and guidelines before anything is designed or fabricated. Reading the rules first is the least exciting part of a roadshow, and it prevents the most expensive mistakes.
Build and teardown windows: installation usually happens after closing and must finish before opening. Pieces that cannot be assembled in that window must arrive pre-built.
Footprint: your queue, barriers, signage stands and storage all count inside the approved space.
Fixings: drilling into floors, walls or railings is generally not allowed, so plan for free-standing, weighted structures.
Height and sightlines: tall structures may need approval so they do not block tenant shopfronts, signage or fire equipment.
Sound: volume is limited because neighbouring tenants trade all day.
Power: supply usually comes from the centre through its appointed electrician. Confirm your load early, especially for screens, fridges or cooking.
Loading bays and goods lifts are booked slots shared with tenants. Measure the lift door and the lift car before you finalise crate sizes. A crate that does not fit becomes a redesign, not a delivery problem.
Food sampling, lucky draws and games of chance can bring extra conditions from the mall and, in some cases, regulatory requirements. Check what your mechanic needs with the centre and the relevant authority well before the campaign is announced.
Public liability insurance.
A method statement describing how the booth is built and removed.
Drawings showing dimensions and materials.
A list of contractors and crew.
Because sound is capped, plan engagement that works without loud music or a constant microphone. Visual hooks, product trials, short games and friendly promoters are more reliable than volume.
Collect these rules for every mall on your list before the design is signed off.
