The fastest way to lose half your team is to schedule a straight round of golf and assume everyone will enjoy it. A good golf team building day gives beginners a way in and gives experienced players something to aim for, without separating them for the whole day.
Team scramble: every player hits, the team picks the best shot and everyone plays from there. Beginners contribute without carrying the score.
Skills stations: longest drive, nearest the pin, chipping into a target and putting relays. Each station is short, visual and easy to explain.
Putting challenge: a putting green tournament with knockout rounds keeps energy up and suits all abilities.
Clinic then challenge: a coached session in the morning followed by a friendly team contest using what people just learned.
Mix departments and abilities in every group. Put at least one confident golfer in each team and brief them to act as a coach rather than a captain. Rotate partners between stations so people meet colleagues beyond their own desk.
Some colleagues will not want to swing a club at all. Offer roles such as scorekeeper, team photographer or station judge, so they stay part of the day rather than waiting in the clubhouse.
Use a points system that rewards teamwork as well as skill: points for every member attempting a shot, bonus points for encouragement, and a small reward for the most improved player. Display the leaderboard where everyone can see it.
Check with the venue what rental clubs, balls and range facilities are available and whether bookings are needed for the range or course. Let beginners know they do not need their own equipment.
Get Out! Events can design the activity flow and run stations on the day; its golf course team building planner page explains how.
