Yes. According to NSF rules and regulations, REU participants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Do we need to send an official transcript or unofficial transcript?

Unofficial transcript is OK.

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no fee to apply for the REU program.

When do students find out if they’ve been accepted into the REU program?

Students will be notified by March/April 2023 if they have been conditionally accepted.  Full acceptance requires passing of a background check.

What are the selection criteria? What is the selection process?

Applications are reviewed based on research goals and interests, as well as what experience and student will bring to the project. Candidates are notified as soon as possible after selection.

How is a research group match decided?

Pairing of an REU student with a research group is based on the student’s personal statement and research lab availability. REU participants are given an opportunity to rank project interest for the coming summer.  Prior to applying, all REU applicants are encouraged to read the scholarship provided at the REU site to inform lab decisions.  During the program, all REU students will have an opportunity to hear from all of the mentors and visit all the labs.

Is the starting date flexible?

The Georgia Southern 2023 ten-week program will begin on May 15 and end in July 21

Where will I live at Georgia Southern University?

On-campus housing is recommended for the ten weeks of the program.  Georgia Southern typically houses REU students in apartment-style residences that are conveniently located within walking distance to the Engineering Department and labs. Campus style apartments vary in size, are furnished, and include kitchens. Students must bring their own linens and kitchen supplies.  You must agree to follow the rules of on-campus housing.

Will I have a roommate?

Yes. All apartments are multiple-occupancy. Therefore, you will have at least one other REU roommate. Each person will have a private bedroom with a shared bath and living area.

Should I bring a car to campus?

We will provide transportation to all program sanctioned events and Georgia Southern has a shuttle service that operates free of charge. However, Georgia Southern is located in a rural area with limited public transportation options and a private vehicle will make it easier to travel around.  A parking fee of $40 per the summer is required and not covered by the REU project.

Can I take a summer course while in the REU program?

No. The REU program requires a full-time commitment that does not allow time for additional summer course work.
