The program addresses pressing societal problems and 21st Century Grand Challenges and will promote the progress of science and advancing the national prosperity, while strengthening the national defense.

The high-quality research environment, through hands-on learning, STEM problem-solving, and mentored communication at both the interpersonal and presentation levels, will prepare students, particularly underrepresented students, to apply interdisciplinary concepts as part of a highly diverse interdisciplinary team. 

What: 10 week  PAID  engineering research experience including partial support for meals and housing.

Intellectual Focus: Participate in nationally recognized research in Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Materials and Controls of Aerial Vehicles.

Where: Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA

When:  May 15- July 21, 2023 (You will get July 5th off for Independence Day) -You will be working 8 hour days

Our program will engage you  through hands-on research in engineering labs and lectures. You will work side by side with researchers on their on-going projects. Participants will collaborate on research presentations and research articles for publication. 

The projects for this REU will challenge students, advance knowledge, and produce valuable scholarship. In addition to their research projects, all REU participants will be mentored to develop their scientific knowledge and skills; research methods, including workplace ethics; and technical writing and oral communication.

Students will participate in industrial visits and cultural activities. The REU site will prepare a new generation of scientific leaders from diverse populations by establishing novel collaborations between Georgia Southern, HBCUs, minority-serving institutions and community colleges; promote exciting undergraduate research that will advance the fundamental body of knowledge in “Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Materials and Controls of Aerial Vehicles” and respond to 21st Century Challenges while the research results will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals. The Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) with seven research laboratories (Aerospace, Aerodynamics, Subsonic tunnel and Wind Energy, Advanced Sensing, Intelligent Control, Fundamental Combustion, Ballistic Impacts), at Georgia Southern University will host a three year 10 week summer-term, interdisciplinary REU Site: “Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Materials and Controls of Aerial Vehicles”.

Any United States citizen, national, or permanent resident/green card holder who is a currently an undergraduate student at an Institution located in the United States* is welcome to apply.  Special consideration will be given to students from HBCUs and minority-serving institutions (MSI), 2-year and community colleges, and 4-year colleges where research opportunities are limited.

The REU site will provide support to 3 cohorts of 10 students for 10 weeks of summer study from 2021 to 2023.

Currently, this REU is planned to run face-to-face following all CDC, national, state, and local guidelines for social distancing.   Should COVID restrictions prevent face-to face meetings from happening, alternatives will be investigated.

For each REU student we will provide*:

$6000 stipend ($600 a week for 10 weeks of the program at GSU),

$500 towards accommodations* (The most economical option will be to be housed in fully furnished Freedom's Landing on campus at $30/night for the 10 weeks of the program). 

$860 towards meals for the 10 weeks of the program (money will be on meal cards which can be used on or off campus),

up to $300 towards travel to the REU site from their current College/University site to GS campus, and

$300 towards academic conference attendance in your field of study (based on registration fees and receipts)

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FOR SUMMER 2023.  We will be evaluating all the applications we received and selecting our interview candidates as quickly as possible. 

*students will be responsible for their own parking ($40) and expenses in excess of given amounts.  Estimated housing fees for students electing to stay in on-campus housing will be an additional $1800 for the REU Program which includes an additional sanitation fee (off campus rates will typically be more with deposits, utility charges and furniture).

All apartments will receive a full detailed cleaning in between camps.  This will include cleaning and disinfecting all surfaces, including mattresses, using an EPA approved disinfectant rated to kill SARS COV-2.  In most cases, we will apply the disinfectant using a fogging machine to all surfaces, allow that disinfectant to sit for the appropriate dwell time based on the chemical being used, and then all surfaces will be thoroughly wiped down.  This will be in addition to the standard cleaning that is done between camps. 

* Eligible Student Participants:  According to NSF rules and regulations for the REU sites,  undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds in either REU Supplements or REU Sites must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States. An undergraduate student is a student who is enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree. Students who are transferring from one college or university to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate. High school graduates who have been accepted at an undergraduate institution but who have not yet started their undergraduate study are also eligible to participate.  

Prior to final acceptance, all students must pass a background check and will be required to submit supplemental documentation for proof of US Citizenship.
