The Mentoring and Research Opportunities for Careers in Coastal Science program is guided by a interdisciplinary leadership team. With contributions from colleges and research entitles across Georgia Southern University, these leaders shape and guide the program for the benefit of our fellows.

Dr. Checo is the program PI and serves as both the Associate Dean of the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies and a tenured professor in the Department of Biology. He has been an integral force in the development of the MROC2S program as well as the GS NSF RESCoPE REU program. As a long-time member of the Society for Freshwater Sciences, Dr. Checo led the way in the creation of the Emerge and Instars programs. As a researcher, he oversees the GS Freshwater Ecology Lab which focuses on understanding the health of aquatic ecosystems across the Southeastern Coastal Plain ecoregion.

Dr. Aslan is a program co-PI and brings perspective as a water scientist and environmental health specialist. Dr. Alsan is the founder of the GS Institute for Water and Health, an entity focused on providing community-focused service science for the southeastern Georgia area. Her international collaborative community along with the research capabilities of the IWH are a strong resource for the program.
Dr. Huffling is an Associate Professor of Education at Georgia Southern University and program co-PI. With degrees in both Biology/Ecology and Education, her contributions are directed to ensuring the efficacy of educational components and facilitating connections with cultural and societal program components.
Dr. Carroll is a professor of Biology and is heavily involved in the SEES school at GS; an entity that brings together faculty across multiple departments to further collaborative, interdisciplinary research. As a researcher, he oversees the Carroll Restoration and Benthic Ecology (CRABEY) Lab in addition to being a program co-PI.
