Engineering Design Challenge (EDC)2021:
Eagle-ROAR2!
Sponsored by:
DESCRIPTION
EDC 2021: Eagle-ROAR2 (Remotely Operated Aerial Recovery) is a novel engineering design competition that engages high school students using unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), in the application of fundamental mathematics, physics, and design engineering. The project is inspired by the success of EDC 2020 and the NASA ARTEMIS 2024 Program. ARTEMIS will return astronauts to the Moon in 2024 and develop the knowledge, technology, and infrastructure to ultimately allow the first humans to reach Mars by 2030. The Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative is a key aspect of ARTEMIS for delivering science and technology to the lunar surface.
Each Eagle-ROAR2 team will be provided with a stock drone and tasked with learning how to fly it, designing a drone-based, 3D printable tool for excavating and delivering lunar or Martian soil. The teams will also document their engineering design work, their understanding of the physics of drone flight, and discuss the theme of Eagle-ROAR2, including the feasibility of lunar drones with a YouTube video presentation suitable for school grades 8-12. The high school teams will be mentored by their STEM teacher, a Georgia Southern engineering student, and an engineer mentor from local companies and academia.
This design competition fulfills the Next Generation High School Engineering Design Standards set forth by the Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE):
Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to design a 3-D printable excavation tool that attaches to a drone to collect lunar or Martian soil (GA DOE High School Engineering Design Standards HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-4). Each team will evaluate their excavation designs based on prioritized criteria and trade-offs that account for a range of constraints, including cost, reliability, and aesthetics (GA DOE High School Engineering Design Standard HS-ETS1-3).
In order to limit the potential spread of COVID19, all team meetings should be held virtually. If unavoidable, any face to face team meetings should be minimized and held in a socially distant manner with all participants wearing masks covering their mouths and noses at all times.
