Engineering Design Challenge (EDC)2020:
DESCRIPTION
EDC 2020: Eagle-ROAR (Remotely Operated Aerial Reconnaissance) is a novel engineering design competition that engages high school students using unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), in the application of fundamental mathematics, physics, and design engineering. The project is inspired by the broad popularity of terrestrial drones, and NASA’s Mars 2020 Rover Mission, which will include an autonomous helicopter (drone).
The indoor VIRTUAL competition will challenge southeastern Georgia area high school student teams to develop a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model of a grappling system attachment for a drone. The grappling system will be 3-D printed and attached to the drone to collect reconnaissance payloads during the competition. Teams will create a video presentation documenting their grappling system design process and explaining the basics of drone flight (lift generation, flight stability, and performance). For the VIRTUAL EDC 2020 competition, teams will create a video presentation of their grappling system and hanger payload designs, and discuss the mechanics of drone flight all based on the EDC 2020- Eagle-ROAR video presentation rubric.
This design competition fulfills the Next Generation High School Engineering Design Standards set forth by the Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE):
Use Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to design a 3-D printable grappling system that attaches to a drone for the acquisition and deployment of a reconnaissance payload (GA DOE High School Engineering Design Standards HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-4). Each team will evaluate their grappling designs based on prioritized criteria and trade-offs that account for a range of constraints, including cost, reliability, and aesthetics (GA DOE High School Engineering Design Standard HS-ETS1-3).
