Dr. Claudia Martinez is an ESOL teacher at North Tattnall Middle School and an adjunct professor at Georgia Southern University. She was the 2020 GATESOL Teacher of the year. Dr. Martinez received the Best Example of Teacher & Student Wellbeing Programs award at the 2022 Georgia Tech and Learning Summit. This year Dr. Martinez was invited to participate in the WIDA Fellow Program. This program brings expert teachers and WIDA professional learning specialists together in a collaborative effort to enhance the development of WIDA professional learning offerings.

Her personal story is proof that when given the right conditions, students can accomplish anything. Dr. Martinez is a first-generation immigrant and high school graduate. She is a product of public education in a southern rural district. She is passionate about educating others and believes in the importance of critical and culturally sustaining pedagogy. She decided to become an ESOL teacher because she knew the EL and Migrant struggle first-hand. "I became an ESOL teacher to help create better learning experiences and opportunities for other minorities," she said. "I want to show other minority students that they can go to college and make a difference. I want them to see me and think, "if she could do it, I can do it too."

La Dra. Claudia Martínez es maestra de ESOL en North Tattnall Middle School y profesora en la Universidad del Georgia Southern University. Fue la Maestra del año 2020 de GATESOL. La Dr. Martínez recibió el premio al Mejor Ejemplo de Programas de Bienestar para Maestros y Estudiantes en la Cumbre de Tecnología y Aprendizaje de Georgia en 2022. Este año, la Dra. Martínez fue invitada a participar en el Programa de becarios de WIDA. Este programa reúne a maestros expertos y especialistas en aprendizaje profesional de WIDA en un esfuerzo de colaboración para mejorar el desarrollo de las ofertas de aprendizaje profesional de WIDA.

Su historia personal es una prueba de que cuando se dan las condiciones adecuadas, los estudiantes pueden lograr cualquier cosa. La Dr. Martínez es un inmigrante de primera generación y la primera de su familia en ir a la Universidad. Ella es producto de la educación pública en un distrito rural del sur  de los Estados Unidos. Le apasiona educar a otros y cree en la importancia de una pedagogía crítica y culturalmente sostenible. Decidió convertirse en maestra de ESOL porque conocía de primera mano la lucha de los estudiantes inmigrantes. "Me convertí en maestra de ESOL para ayudar a crear mejores experiencias de aprendizaje y oportunidades para otras minorías", dijo. "Quiero mostrarles a otros estudiantes de minorías que pueden ir a la universidad y hacer una diferencia. Quiero que me vean y piensen, 'si ella pudo hacerlo, yo también puedo'".
