EVERY team member has the chance to participate in competitions. No one sits on the bench.
It is a great way to make friends. The cross-country team is a close knit group of students. We typically have several get-togethers and team dinners throughout the season.
You don’t need any prior experience. Even if you have never run before, you can be successful and improve in cross-country. Everyone has to start somewhere!
EVERYONE can reach their goals. Each team member works with Coach Burton to come up with personal goals. These goals range from completing a 5k in a certain time, to making the varsity team, to running a certain number of miles in training. By having personal goals that are based on the athlete’s previous running experience, every athlete has to opportunity to be successful.
Running is lifelong sport. By fostering a love for running at a young age, you set yourself for a healthy future.
You get to travel to meets with your team. Every member who attends all practices is eligible to travel to meets.
Experience Success! The East View Cross Country Team is one of the most successful programs at the school. Our girls and boys have both won district championships!
Q. What if I have never run before?
A. That is fine! Some of the best 12th grade runners in the state had never run a step before 9th grade. You will be surprised at how quickly you can improve! Workouts are tailor made to your incoming level of fitness.
Q. Are there try-outs?
A. No. If you are willing to put in 100% effort and make a commitment to attend all practices, then you have a spot on the team. See more on this under Team Expectations.
Q. Do you practice in summer?
A. YES, the team meets during the summer. The team gets together on Mon – Friday at 7:15 am (before it gets too hot) in San Gabriel Park in Georgetown. Whether you meet up with the team or not, running in summer is crucial to your success as a runner in cross-country.
Q. What time is practice during the year?
A. Practice is before school, Monday through Friday, with meets on the weekends. We will meet at EVHS at 6:15 am during the week. Students will do additional strength and conditioning during the cross-country class period.
Q. Do I need to be in the cross country period to be on the team?
A. No. We have several athletes that are in other sports or the cross country period does not fit their schedule. The vast majority of the team practice is before school, so you wont be missing out on much.
Q. Can I run cross country if I want to do another sport?
A. YES! Some of our best runners do multiple sports in high school. Even if both sports meet at the same time of year, we can work out a schedule with the other sports coach that works best for you.
