Professional School Counselor's Role on Campus
Schools Counselors work closely with campus and district leadership to support the overall environment of the campus. The school counselor's role on the campus is:
To support the academic and social/emotional growth of all students
To collaborate with other stakeholders in the students' lives to support all students
To educate all students utilizing classroom guidance lessons on various topics
To promote the professional development of all staff in terms of social/emotional and mental health topics
To work with parents to provide community resources
Leadership and Advocacy
The Benold School Counseling team consists of a team of professionals who advocate for students in academic and social/emotional aspects of their lives. The Benold School Counseling team works closely with their administration team, campus teams, and PTA to develop programs/systems that best support the needs of their students and families.
One component of their program is the creation of The Nest. This space allows students to identify when they are feeling unregulated (self-awareness) and apply appropriate coping strategies to assist in getting back to the "yes brain." In addition, the Benold Middle School Counseling team, in conjunction with the Health & Wellness Advisory Design Team, is promoting the use of restorative practices through the campus Reset Room. Students are given opportunities to process through different situations by self-reflecting and building their toolkits with appropriate behaviors in the future. Through this process students are able to recognize how their actions affect others, repair relationships, and apply coping strategies to help them reset and return to class.
