St. Ignatious of Loyola
The School of Foreign Service Graduate Student Council is committed to bringing visibility to all students from the SFS, while organizing events to foster a sense of community between programs to develop professional connections in an ever-growing diverse world.
There are three broad purposes of the SFS Graduate Student Council. First, it provides graduate students a forum in which they can share ideas and concerns with the SFS Dean’s Office. Second, it provides graduate students an opportunity to develop and implement activities and events of common interest to all the graduate students in the SFS. Third, drawing upon the diversity and richness of our individual programs, the Council works to help forge a sense of common identity for the graduate students in the SFS.
The Council consists of 16 elected representatives, one per cohort of each of the eight SFS graduate programs. From the full Council, an executive team is selected and consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a Community Engagement Chair. Our meetings are held every two weeks during the academic semester.
Each program elects their representative based on their preferences and an election for new representatives are held in the beginning of the fall for the incoming first-year cohorts, and at the end of the academic year. Please stay tuned or contact your Master's program coordinator or any of the current second-year representatives for questions about involvement.
The SFS Graduate Student Council is separate from Graduate Student Government ("GradGov") which is responsible for the governance of all graduate students at Georgetown, including those at the Law Center, Business School, School of Public Policy and Medical Campuses. Many of our representatives have dual-appointments with SFS Grad Council and Grad Gov and we work together frequently on joint-campaigns and in service to our student-body.
