Seeking healthy adults ages 18 to 65
If you are between the ages of 18 and 65, you may be eligible to participate in the OURBIOTIC study, a clinical trial sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, conducted by the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University.
If you are eligible, we will provide you with a 7-day course of amoxicillin-clavulanate and a 14-day supply of a strawberry-flavored yogurt drink. You will be randomly assigned to receive either a strawberry yogurt supplemented with the active-culture probiotic BB-12 or a regular strawberry yogurt without BB-12. Each participant will drink 4 ounces of the yogurt every day.
You will receive up to $120 for your participation. No travel is required; we can come to you.
Around 20-35% of people experience diarrhea when taking antibiotics. Probiotics, often known as “good bacteria,” may be able to help.
The OURBIOTIC study wants to see if a strawberry yogurt smoothie with the probiotic BB-12 helps prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea, or AAD. This yogurt is processed and packaged at the Berkey Creamery at Penn State. Our team is partnering with the University of Maryland to take a closer look at how antibiotics and probiotics affect your gut microbiome. You may have read or heard about the microbiome in the news before, as scientists believe it is related to many aspects of health. At the end of the study, you may choose to receive our reports describing your gut microbiome before and after taking the yogurt and antibiotic.
