@Georgetownmaincampus (CSJ)
The CSJ has been a great resource for my journey as a leader, I have had the opportunity to be honoured with the Gwendolyn Mickell Award for Womxn’s Empowerment as well as be a recipient of the Social Innovation and Public Service (SIPS) Fund. This was my first time at the main campus and my first time putting some faces to the names I had in my head like Dr Andria Wisler. Her initial reaction immediately she saw my name on a placard infrong of me was the highlight of my day. She said “You are Nelly from SIPS right?” Immediately my mood was lifted and I felt really seen. I felt like I was a woman being recognized for her work in change-making, by name and not just as “the GUQ students”. I think it is important to have intentional resources like the CSJ as they help to give students a platform to engage in leadership work that always seems so farfetched. I am always grateful for having had the CSJ give me an opportunity to be part of them. A very incredible community.
When we split up in smaller groups to have a reflection circle, it felt a lot like a re-introduction to self. Like I was reminding myself all over again why this trip was important to me, why I wanted to create change in my community and why I should not be scared to be the first one to do so.
It was empowering to meet other young people who share similar values and aspirations. It helps to learn that it is okay to have big dreams, it is okay to have so much passion, and with the right networks, it could all be fueled to a cause that brings positive impact in our communities.

Women have always been a big part of my journey. My mother taught me from a young age the importance of being a person that shares with others. And as an adult, I have practised that philosophy in varying ways. I share my knowledge with others in my community who do not have access to the coursework I have been exposed to. I share my skills and experience with other young women who are building their brands and footprints in the world. I have volunteered for various initiatives that have helped me to have an enriching experience altogether.
