The Students for Justice in Palestine Club Statement
23rd September, 2021
As the Palestinian struggle against colonialism and apartheid continues in full force, we, the Students for Justice in Palestine, continue to assert our solidarity with our Palestinian comrades. With the recent six prisoners who liberated themselves from the colonial prison system, we continue to see Palestinians standing up and fighting in many different ways. Sheikh Jarrah, Silwan, Beita, and other Palestinian villages continue to face threats of ethnic cleansing. Their struggle did not end in May. The struggle will not end until we see a liberated Palestine, from the river to the sea.
So, the Students for Justice in Palestine at Georgetown University in Qatar would like to re-emphasize our statement from May 13th, 2021. We continue to call upon the GU-Q and Qatar Foundation community to stand in solidarity with Palestine. We continue to urge our community to support their Palestinian students and create safer spaces in classes by not equating Palestinian and Zionist voices. We ask for each member to continue to speak up against the atrocities that settler-colonialism and apartheid have imposed on Palestinians, to amplify Palestinian voices and to not engage with acts of normalization.
The Students for Justice in Palestine club would also like to extend our thanks to the GU-Q faculty who worked on and signed the statement expressing their solidarity with the Palestinian people in May of 2021. We ask the faculty to continue to stand by their commitment of “not engaging in any activities that would support or legitimize crimes against the Palestinian people.” In recognizing Israel as an apartheid state, we also would like to remind faculty of the importance of the academic boycott that is foundational to the BDS movement. The guidelines for the academic boycott can be found here. We understand that at SFS-Q, discussions on Palestinian case are central to many courses on history, politics, and culture. We ask you to be mindful of the way these discussions are approached.
SJP would also like to thank the Student Government Association at GU-Q for their statement of solidarity on Palestine. We look forward to continuing working with the SGA in creating safe spaces for voices on Palestine and to combat any actions on campus that normalize or legitimizes the oppression of Palestinians.
We hope to continue to see the support we saw the past summer as we continue our fight against settler colonialism and apartheid.
Until liberation,
Students for Justice in Palestine, GU-Q
