Awutu is an endangered Guang language (Kwa; Niger-Congo) spoken in the Central Region of Ghana. Like many Guang languages, Awutu is under threat of extinction due to increased use of Akan, English, and other majority languages in Ghana. Crucially, our sociolinguistic survey has revealed that many parents do not speak Awutu at home with their children, that traditional meetings are not conducted in the language, and that an increasing share of young people do not speak the language. All of these are indicators that a language is under threat and at risk of becoming endangered. All three point to a dire situation for the Awutu language. Given this background, our project strives to document the Awutu language and to create an archive of linguistic materials for both the community and for academic use. Our hope is that by documenting the language, publishing about it, and engaging the community with it, we will contribute to its revitalization.
