There are many skills that will assist your child in being ready for school. Some of these skills include:
INDEPENDENCE:
Clearly and appropriately expressing their wants and needs
Caring for their own belongings
Confidently using the toilet
Washing and drying their hands
Removing and putting on their own clothing
LEARNING:
Knowing letters of the alphabet
Counting and recognising numbers
Holding a pencil
Using scissors
Following simple directions
Interacting positively with others
Please do not worry if you child is still developing some of these skills. We are experienced teachers and we are happy to support your child at whatever stage they are at in their learning journey. Please discuss any concerns you have with us during your child's first school visit. We are happy to help!
If your child has any social, behavioural or learning needs, or has been receiving any extra specialist support, it is helpful if you could share this information with our principal when you enrol (please note: this will not affect your acceptance to our school). If we are fully informed, we are able to have support systems in place to ensure a successful transition to school.
In New Zealand, the Ministry of Health provides each child with a 'Before School Check'. This involves meeting with a public health nurse and discussing the development of your child. They will ask you questions about your child's behaviour and learning and you will be able to access support if you have any concerns about your child's health (e.g. eating, toileting, sleeping).Â
You may receive a pamphlet from your child's early childhood centre about this service or you can contact your doctor or medical centre for further information.
