Intercultural 2020

Welcome to Intercultural 2020!

Every year to close out Cultural Harmony week the Alliance for Community Enrichment (ACE) holds an Intercultural Dinner. At this dinner all the cultural clubs under ACE come together to celebrate their differences but also their similarities. That is the beauty of Intercultural.

Due to the circumstances caused by COVID-19 Intercultural looks different this year. The African Student Association (ASA), Black Student Union (BSU), Caribbean Student Association (CSA), Chinese Culture Club at Geneseo (CCCG), Hillel at Geneseo, Himalayan Student Association (HSA), Japanese Culture Club (JCC), Korean American Student Association (KASA), Latinx Student Association (LSA), Pride Alliance, and Shakti came together to build the Intercultural website! Everything that you would see at the Intercultural dinner is on this website. As you go through you will see recipes, movie recommendations, book recommendations, a special playlist and a memory box that holds memories from past events and past intercultural dinners that all of the ACE groups put together.

ACE .mp4

Alliance for Community Enrichment, also known as ACE, aims to promote and encourage the growth of a diverse environment for all students in the Geneseo community. ACE will be a committee, which shall increase the presence of cultural and under-represented communities (including, but not limited to racial, ethnic, gender, sexuality and ability) on the Geneseo campus by advocating and through the use of collaboration and programming.

Himalayan Student Association (HSA)

The Himalayan Student Association (HSA) hopes to spread awareness and encourage involvement among Nepalese students and other individuals who share an interest in the culture and history. Future events and activities include Lhosar, Holi, and Tihar. Lhosar marks the celebration of a new year for Buddhists. The holiday is celebrated on the first day of the lunisolar Tibetan calendar, which corresponds to a date in February or March. The HSA organization will be coming together to make and prepare khapse (a Tibetan/Sherpa biscuit that is traditionally prepared during Losar). Holi is a Hindu festival, also known as the "festival of colours", celebrated in India and Nepal. Dashain and Tihar are two Hindu festivals celebrated every fall. Kite flying is one of the events planned in celebration of these festivals. To commemorate this occasion there will be a “Decorate your kite with a personalized message”.

Japanese Culture Club (JCC)

Japanese Culture Club exists to promote relations between members of the club and the community through the exploration of Japanese culture. We act as a bridge between Japanese, American, and any culture with the intention to exchange cultural views and to dispel stereotypes.

Korean American Student Association (KASA)

Latinx Student Association (LSA)

The goals of the Latinx Student Association is to aid in developing an appreciation and understanding of the Latinx culture, to promote education and scholastic achievement among members, to provide a positive interaction with the community, and to foster such programs as may be indicated by these objectives.

Pride Alliance

Pride Alliance provides a safe and welcoming community for LGBTQ+ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, pansexual, asexual, nonbinary, etc.) and ally members.

Shakti

Shakti is SUNY Geneseo's South Asian club. The word 'Shakti' originates from Sanskrit and means power or strength. Shakti at Geneseo represents the people of the countries of South Asia—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, and the Maldives.

Shakti's goal is to spread South Asian culture to the students at SUNY Geneseo, and make them more aware of the countries, culture, customs, problems, and people of South Asia. At weekly General Meetings we talk about festivals, diversity, political events, games, and such that take place in the countries of South Asia. Members consist not only of students from South Asian countries, but also students who want to know more about the region, and want to be involved in our events.
