Dear Literations Literacy Coach,
Thank you for your continued service in our program and, most importantly, for the support you provide to your students in your coaching sessions. Soon we will be asking you to complete a survey to check in with you about your student(s).
Student Social Emotional Learning (SEL)* Check-In Survey
The SEL survey is a set of 5 questions for you to answer about each student you coach. This survey, conducted several times during the year, asks for your feedback about your students’ social emotional engagement with our program and how you feel they are progressing. You should answer each question based on your observation of your students relative to the questions asked. Each student survey should take about 5 minutes. Please base your responses on behaviors your student demonstrated in your first 5-6 weeks of sessions so we have comparison data. We have attached a rubric below to give you guidance for each question.
Please complete the survey during the 5th-6th week of sessions with your student. We will also provide time during a team meeting to ask questions and/or get support. We will ask you again to fill out these same questions at the end of our program year.
We will be reaching out to you soon with instructions for completing the survey. In the meantime, please feel free to learn more about SEL, and review the SEL Rating Guide before completing the survey.
Thank you so much for your support and insights!
Best,
The Literations Program Team
* Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Social Emotional Learning highlights the importance of learning self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making that will lead to necessary interpersonal skills for greater life success.
The below 5 components of SEL are taught in schools and have been closely associated with a number of positive benefits for children, such as:
Better academic performance
Improved attitudes and behaviors
Fewer negative behaviors
Reduced emotional distress
While our program provides reading support, you also offer your students important social emotional support by consistently being there for your students twice weekly, by taking an interest in their schooling and their lives, and by being a trusted adult who listens to them.
The 5 questions selected for this survey represent age appropriate SEL skills for grade 1-4 students that are easily observable through your sessions. The questions were developed by Panorama Education, a reliable and reputable educational research company.
