E -Safety Tips
Dear Parents,
As students are nearing their Term 3 assessments, they are likely to be spending more time online as they revise using either SAM Learning or GCSEPod. These are invaluable resources that can support students in consolidating their understanding of the learning from their lessons as well as helping them with any areas they didn’t understand. However, it is important as parents that we monitoring how our children are navigating the online world in a similar way to how we look after them in real life. Please see some tips below to support you with this:
1. Discover the internet together. When child is doing research for homework for example, visit the sites with them.
2. Agree with your child the rules for the internet for your home. Discuss for how long they should be online, what information they shouldn’t share online, what to do if they feel uncomfortable, and agree what sites are allowed or not.
3. Encourage your child to be careful with disclosing personal information. Do remind them that once an image is shared online for example, it can be used anywhere.
4. Talk to your child about the risk of making friends online and meeting them in real life. As with anyone your child hasn’t met before, you should be aware of the person they are meeting and have contact details.
5. Let your children show you what they like to do online. In order to guide them online, you need to know what they are doing and where they are going so you can offer advice.
6. Set parental controls on the Wi-Fi at home. Your Wi-Fi provider (Etisalat, DU etc) can support you with this as well as the IT team at school. Having parental controls on your Wi-Fi and children’s devices means that they won’t be able to access site and content that is suitable to their age.
We hope that with these tips your children can continue to access the internet safely and get all of the amazing benefits it has to offer.
