A Message from the
Director of Learning for Key Stage 5

Dear Parents,

Did your network change to ‘UAE Reads’ on the 1st of March? This is so because the month of March is celebrated in the UAE as the month of reading. It was first celebrated in 2016 and seeing the huge success, HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai declared March to be the month of reading.

This week is also the World Book Week and WSR celebrated both the events by hosting a number of events like performance poetry, recreating book scenes, book characters and book covers in various forms including a cake. Our teachers displayed their love of reading by sending pictures of them reading in extreme conditions. We will be sharing all these with you soon 😊

Coming back to the month of reading, the theme this year is, ‘My Family Reads’. The UAE Government wants to stress the importance of parents reading to children. It hopes to transform reading into a daily habit which would help build a future generation driving the change of development. Various studies have found that parents reading to their children help strengthen their bond and also results in child getting better grades. Studies also show that children who read for pleasure do remarkable better than their peers. This is one of the reasons why Reading and Literacy is one of our school priorities.

Starting this week, I would like to urge you to inculcate the love of books and reading in your children. There are many simple ways to do it. You could set a specific reading time, when the entire family stops doing other things and reads. Another good one is to decide on page numbers for the day, so everyone reads the same page numbers in their books.

You can also go through the links given below for some more ideas on reading as a family.

As J.K. Rowling says, something magical happens when we read a book; and if you say you don’t like to read, it only means you have not found the right book. Happy reading 😊

Warm Regards,
