Election Support

Whether you're a teacher, parent, or student, in the midst of a contentious election, you may be feeling some heightened emotions. Here are some tips and resources for navigating the 2020 election as well as practicing self-care during this time!

Self-Care Tips

  • Focus on the basics -- getting enough to eat and enough sleep. This is crucial for taking care of your body and mind!

  • Give yourself space to process what's going on in the world -- it's okay to feel anxious, scared, angry, or sad. Check out some of the resource tabs on stress, emotions, and mindfulness for some helpful strategies to work through these big emotions.

  • Limit your attention to news and social media -- with the seemingly endless reel of terrible news and arguing in virtually every corner of social media, remember it's okay to take a break from the news or certain people you follow.

  • Reach out -- look around you. Try to empathize with others who may not feel the same as you. See if there are ways for you to positive show support for causes you believe in.

  • Stick with facts -- keep any discussions to the facts, and gather information from unbiased sources.

  • Interrupt your negative thoughts -- notice when you're thinking of "worst case scenarios" or when your worries start to snowball. Try to interrupt those thoughts with some positive affirmations, talking to a trusted peer or adult, or redirecting your attention to something that distracts or relaxes you!

  • Take things one day at a time -- when everything feels out of control, it can be easy to spiral and obsess over the future. Try to focus on what you can control in the here and now. You don't have to feel out of control even if the world is.
