What does a School Counselor do?

Direct Student Services

  • Individual Counseling: This can occur in two different formats.

    • "Check Ins" or Immediate Student Support- These occur as needed to address a temporary need of a student whether it be a challenge with peers or a more serious crisis.

    • Individual Student Planning- Sometimes a student can benefit from short term one-on-one counseling services in order to work through various difficulties. Topics include anger, stress management, anxiety, academic struggles, in-class behavior, low self-esteem, etc. However, the school counselor does not provide ongoing intensive therapy.

  • Group Counseling: Small groups are established as needed for various concerns such as grief, anger, self-esteem, peer relations, etc.

  • Classroom Counseling Lessons: Lesson topics include but are not limited to the following: being a good friend, making appropriate choices, study skills, and living a safe and healthy lifestyle.

  • Referrals: These include referrals to outside counseling services or other community resources for family needs.
