Week Five - September 30th 2021
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
I must commend our students for participating so willingly in the MAP testing that has been taking place this week. Core activities, along with teaching and learning, have taken place around the testing and many students in secondary also had grade level assemblies. I had the chance to speak to secondary students in these assemblies (Grade 8 will be on Sunday 3rd), which was wonderful, given that last year we could not manage this owing to social distancing restrictions. I am impressed with so many of our students, who bring a range of languages, cultures and experiences to our school. We encourage all our students to maintain this diversity and to bring this richness to the school. In turn, we offer a clear and strong school culture, one that was defined and honed by you, our staff, students and whole community last year: Respect, Trust and Ambition. I am delighted by the start that so many students of all ages have made in engaging with this culture.
It was a pleasure this week to congratulate the newly appointed Primary School Council and House Captains. We promote student voice at GIS and student leadership, opportunity and responsibility play a large part of life here. Those who did not make it this time should not be discouraged because there will be many opportunities (even ones which they create!) to lead, to take risks and to shine. Many will come back even stronger and I am proud of all those who put their names forward. Thank you to Ms Janice who led the first session this week and really set the tone for the year.
It is rare for me to mention the same group of children two weeks in a row, but you will remember from last week’s newsletter that the Tareeqi students invited me and Ms. Amanda to tea and cake this week. We were so impressed - it was delicious and the occasion was so well managed, with each student adopting a role, such as master chef, barista, front of house etc. Thank you to Ms. Juliet and the team and I look forward to the next invitation!
Finally, to ensure a smooth start to each school day, may I make a quick request to all parents: it would be hugely appreciated, and would save the administration teams here a lot of time, if you would let the school (Primary or Secondary) know if your child is absent. Please do this first thing in the morning, before the start of school, and we will then not worry in terms of the safeguarding or health and safety of your child. Of course, this is part of the school-home contract, and as a courtesy it really is very helpful indeed. Thank you very much.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
