Week Thirty Four - May 13th 2022
Dear parents
We hope you had a wonderful Eid break. I spoke to a number of students this week, who exclaimed how lovely it was to have some extra time with family & friends. Hopefully this means that everyone is refreshed for the last few weeks of the school year. For students who may not have performed as well in some subjects, there is still time to ensure that your final result truly reflect you as a learner.
At the mention of results, please note that students in Grades 9 to 11 will have examinations commencing at the end of the month. Further guidance with regard to how to study and what content may present in the papers will be communicated to parents shortly.
MAP testing in Mathematics took place this week also. In our constant effort to make the educational journey a less stressful experience, we are trialing an alternative way of administering these assessments. Rather than placing multiple tests in one week, we plan to assess one subject per week. Hence, reducing the anxiety that some of our students feel.
Finally, this week, I would like to congratulate our swimmers and their coaches who participated in the Dubai Schools Games event this week. Many students arrived back at school with medals around their neck, many arrived back h=being proud to have participated and represented their school – well done everyone.
Have a wonderful week ahead everyone.
Amanda Murphy
Head of Secondary School
You will begin to notice a gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions as we receive permission to do so. Thermal camera's have been removed from school entrances. Social distancing, masks, vaccinations and limited access to school facilities remain in place. We will continue with the same protocols for entrance and dismissal gates for the time being. An important update last month is the discontinuation of remote learning by KHDA. Any student accessing remote learning school sessions must provide the necessary medical documentation and the school must submit a report on their behalf to avoid fines. Please understand that GIS does not have authority to permit remote learning without KHDA approval. Regular processes apply for students that will be absent from school (shared at the end of the newsletter). For more information on how to apply for exemption to on campus learning, contact our clinic at GIS_MedicalAlert@GEMSEdu.com

This week, GIS students participated in the TIMSS 2023 Field Study and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
The TIMSS 2023 Field study was undertaken by all students in 8A and 8C, while PISA assessed a random sample of 53 students across grades 9 to 11. We would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to all students who participated in these studies.
TIMSS is an international study that takes place every four years and gathers data from over 60 countries. TIMSS looks at how well students in grades 4 and 8 can apply knowledge and skills in Mathematics and Science. The results are used by governments from around the world to improve their education systems, so it’s vitally important that international schools participate. Further information on the study is available at https://timssandpirls.bc.edu/timss2023/index.html and https://www.iea.nl/studies/iea/timss/timss2023#section-652.
PISA is a triennial international survey which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students. Its aim is to measure the selected students’ academic performance in Reading, Mathematics and Science. To date, students from more than 70 countries have participated in the assessment. Its ultimate objective is to provide comparative data which enables nations to improve their education policies and outcomes. PISA measures the extent to which students, who are nearing the end of compulsory education, can apply their knowledge to real-life situations, and be equipped for fulfilling engagement and participation in society. PISA measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges" (https://www.oecd.org/pisa/).
GIS welcomed back the U.S. Education Group university fair on Thursday, with invitations extending to all students in Grades 9-11. The University Roadshow featured 15 American universities.
Gulf EDU Tours will bring 18 universities from Europe, Canada, US and UAE to GIS for a 8:30-9:30 fair in the MPH on Thursday, May 19th.
Please see the below posters for lists of participating universities. We hope students will take advantage of the opportunity to engage with the visiting university reps and ask questions about university pathways, career outcomes, campus life and admissions criteria.
This week, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub to the MYP students during Advisory. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will be the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.

Ramadan QuranAthon!
Ramadan is the month of the Quran. Our proficient students recited the Holy Quran and we recorded it as a non-stop video for the GIS community. The video will be shared with you soon. The skillful students were given certificates and trophies by Ms Amanda for their beautiful recitation - well done to everyone who participated!
Our students, Laith Shubeilat (G8) and Thani AlMheiri (G10) visited GEMS New Millennium School for a Quran recitation competition called ‘Lulu AL Marjan’. They proudly represented GIS and recited verses of the Holy Quran from Surah Yaseen and Surah Al Khaf. Well done, Laith and Thani!
This week, Grade 7 students were learning how to design advertisements about their favorite clubs.
This week, some Grade 6 students participated in the GIS Gourmet Competition, coordinated by the GIS StuELT. Students were challenged to bake cookies and were then judged by Mr Cameron and members of StuELT on taste, presentation, kitchen cleanliness and theme.
Students are encouraged to bring a packed lunch to school - particularly while COVID-19 restrictions are in place - as it ensures that they are able to eat and drink as required throughout the school day.
