Week Thirty Two - April 22th 2022
Kimberly Conlin
Dear Parents,
It has been such a wonderful time in the PYP with a focus on caring for one another and the environment. We continue to practice gratitude for all we have and send blessings to our school and global community moving forward. Thank-you to community members for taking part in the blood drive, and for all the clothing and food donations.
We are looking forward to our community Iftar Monday evening for all those community members that have signed up. Thank-you to our Islamic Department for organizing this event for our community. Next week, we enter the final week of Ramadan, followed by the Eid break. Monday May 2nd and Tuesday May 3rd are confirmed holidays with Wed May 4th to be confirmed based on moon sighting.
We are always so proud of the growth we see in our 5th grade students, the final year of the PYO. These students are working toward transition to MYP. Following a successful PYP exhibition, the learning objectives in term 3 support the successful transition. A big thank-you to our PYP coordinator Mr K and MYP Coordinator Ms Sandy for their support to students throughout this term.
Finally, I invite all parents next Thursday April 28th to learn about a series of parent sessions to support positive relationship building at home with your own children. This approach will strengthen home to school connections and lead to a more peaceful approach to parents.
Have a fantastic weekend.

Our PYP Student Council joined the initiatives from the Secondary Service Committee this month to fundraise money and collect donations for Dar Al Ber Society, an organization that provides for orphans around the world. Our student leaders have been hard at work each morning, counting and sorting clothes and presenting to homeroom classes.
You may have seen them handing out flyers and encouraging our GIS parents to donate! Stop by and have a chat with our students - they are passionate about the cause, and are eager to reach our goal of 1000 pieces of clothing and shoes by the end of Ramadan.
A big thank you for all the book donations received from students during GIS Lit Fest! We are busy sorting, listing, and packing all the books to send to the organization “Old Books for new Eyes”, a project which started in May 2019 in Jumeirah Primary School by Khushi Gadhia as part of a Ramadan kindness project by collecting used storybooks in her school. She initially collected 500 books which were then transported to Kenya by air through friends and family. These books were used to start the 1st library in Loresho Primary School in Nairobi. This program has expanded significantly due to the support of donor schools in the UAE and logistics support for transport from the UAE. Books are transported to Kenya/Uganda/Tanzania to create libraries in underprivileged schools across the 3 countries. The target for 2022 is 100 libraries. Follow their progress on Facebook (@ Old Books for New Eyes page) or Instagram @oldbooks4neweyes.
This is an ongoing project at GIS, so please feel free to donate suitable books up to a reader age of 16 years, which are still in a good state of repair, to the library.
