Week Twenty Eight - March 11th 2022
I was unfortunate last weekend to contract Covid, so have spent this week working from home. I am so appreciative to everyone who has taken on extra responsibilities in my absence.
Meanwhile, this week we have hosted CIS visitors virtually in preparation for our 5 year visit. I am sure that others have referenced this important event elsewhere in the Newsletter, but I would like to express by thanks to all staff involved in such an important event. The planning, organization and effort required to coordinate these last five days, is huge. Well done and thank you to Ms Kim for being the driver behind this week and ensuring that our wonderful school is shown off in all its glory!
Also, this week we celebrated International Women’s Day by having students wear purple accessories to school on Tuesday. Roshanak Harirchian & Sahar Najibzadeh coordinated this important day as part of their CAS. The girls shared posters, slides and important messages emphasizing the importance of having a world free of bias, stereotypes, discrimination; a world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive; a world where difference is valued and celebrated. Congratulations on a terrific effort Ladies!
Ms Mariona, our CPC, ran a ConnectEd session on Wednesday regarding our recent partnership with Embry Riddle. Thank you to all the parents that attended this importance launch. Should you have missed it, you will find the link to the recording here. We are so excited that our Grade 10 students will be the first young people in the UAE to have the opportunity to work with such a reputable university. Thanks again to Ms Mariona for such a dedicated and consistent effort.
While on the topic of celebrating achievement, Mr Vikas Sigh, our Head of Department for Design & Art, was recently invited to present at the Middle East School Leadership Conference held in Dubai. Mr Vikas presented on the theme ‘Leading the Change’. His session was a talk show where moderators asked questions based on leading change. It was a wonderful opportunity for Vikas to promote GIS and the excellent work being carried out here. However, we are very, very proud of Mr. Vikas for being considered an expert in his field. Well done!
Finally, some wonderful news from the sports field. Sumer Lal recently competed in the Championship Series tournament held in Ahmedabad. Sumer was able to compete after a gap of approx. 8 months and successfully qualified having fought his way through to the finals. While the final lasted for over 2 grueling hours, Sumer just missed winning the intense game. That being said, his participation in the tournament helped him better understand his strengths and most importantly his areas of improvement. Well done Sumer – we are proud of you!
I am looking forward to getting back onto campus next week. In the meantime, I wish you and your family an enjoyable weekend. Please do remember to visit the GIS Expo on Saturday!
Stay safe and best wishes

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
A great celebration for International Women's Day, organised by GIS students, Roshanak and Sahar.
Take a look at the video below for some great insights into the day!
We are proud to announce the launch of new IB Career-related Programme pathways at GIS for our incoming Grade 11 cohort. As you know, we currently have 23 students enrolled into our IBCP Business and Creative Media pathways. Students enrolling into Grade 11 for 2022-23 will also have the possibility of choosing the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Dual Enrollment Program at GIS. Through ERAU, students will be able to specialize in Aeronautics and Aviation or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students will also be able to specialize in Business combined with either of the two previous pathways (Business with Aeronautics and Aviation or Business with STEM).
Given GIS’s current Center for Aviation, Aeronautics and Space provision for MYP students, it was a natural step to develop our students’ passion for Aeronautics, Aviation and STEM in their last two years prior to university. We know that many GIS families have either personal or professional connections to the aviation industry in Dubai and hope that these pathways enable our students to continue this legacy.
ERAU’s history goes back over 90 years and is currently one of the most prestigious aviation and aeronautical universities in the world. ERAU currently offers a wide variety of science-related programs that range from Applied Science, Aviation, Business, Computers & Technology, Engineering, Space and Security, Intelligence and Safety, amongst others. If you would like to learn more about ERAU, please visit their website here.
In the meantime, we would like to invite you to join our ConnectEd session in collaboration with ERAU this coming Wednesday, March 9th at 11.00 am. During the session, you will learn details about the program and you will have the chance to ask burning questions.

This week, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub to the MYP students during Advisory. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will be the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
THE PERSONAL PROJECT
In the Personal Project Grade 10 students have the opportunity to showcase the skills they developed throughout the MYP. They have to choose something they want to learn about and decide on a product to create. Our Grade 10 students have now completed their products and what they have done is seriously impressive! We hope to be able to host an exhibition later on in the year to share their wonderful work with the whole community, but I would like to give you a sneak preview of some of their work over coming weeks.
Ms Sandy

This week, grade 7 students learned about “ Weathering, Erosion and Deposition” through the scavenger hunt activity. The students had to search the outdoor area to find pictures and descriptions of different landforms formed by deposition. They had to match this information to the correct landforms and conclude the weathering and eroding agents for each one. The students enjoyed their activity and had positive feedback about their learning experience.
A virtual visit from a GIS graduate and former Global Politics student, Tim Oude Kotte. Tim joined our class via Zoom to share his experiences with university life in Hague, Netherlands, and to give advice on succeeding in DP Global Politics.
The students showcased their learning of Islamic history and the core concepts of Islam this week by engaging their creative brains and creating posters for display. They also displayed collaboration, research, and communication skills during this work.
