Week Twenty Eight - March 11th 2022
Head of Primary
Dear Primary School Parents,
An important component of the Primary Years Programme (IB) is the grade 5 exhibition. This is a culminating, collaborative experience in the final year of the IB Primary Years Programme. Students explore, document, and share their understanding of an issue or opportunity of personal significance. This final learning project signals the end of the PYP and holds the same significance as a primary school graduation. All GIS community members will have an opportunity to celebrate with our community on Wed March 23rd.
Some key purposes of the PYP exhibition for students are…
• to engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry
• to demonstrate agency and responsibility for their learning
• to demonstrate attributes of the IB learner profile
• to explore multiple perspectives
• to synthesize and apply their learning
• to reflect on their PYP education
• to celebrate their transition to the next stages of their education
Next week at GIS we celebrate learning differences through Diversity Celebration Week. Sessions for students will take place during regularly scheduled classes. We recognise the strengths and talents of neurodivergent students who think and learn differently, including students who are autistic, dyslexic, dyspraxic or who have ADHD. A parent session, led by our SEN team will take place at the Hillhouse in Dubai Hills on Tuesday March 15th.

Across the school we are all preparing for diversity awareness week! Ms. Louise and Ms. Rose have pulled some books celebrating diversity for students to engage with throughout the week and teachers have planned activities to support understanding of neurodiversity.
This week we peeked into the KG1 art classrooms. The inspiration for learning this week came from a reading of Where the Wild Things Are. After the reading, students were asked to use their imagination and create their own creatures as if they were going on a similar journey. They had such a wonderful time during the process! Students put their modeling and sculpting skills into practice as they turned on their imagination to create their fantastical creature. Additionally, students had an opportunity to further enhance their creations by adding a mixture of different media. Please ask your child about their creation and the thinking behind it!
