Week Twenty One - January 21st 2022
Dear Parents,
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ
Assalamu alaikum.
Today I have written my opening message to you in Arabic, as GIS participated in ‘Arabic Language Day’ across the school on Thursday 20th January. The range of learning activities was extraordinary and our students also enjoyed videos from staff and parents (my thanks to all who contributed). Language games such as ‘word and spoon races’, charades and a ‘wordsearch wall’ were particularly popular. Both our primary and secondary Arabic teams, led by Mr. Magid and Ms. Amineh, deserve huge thanks for their preparations
May I take this opportunity to wish our Grade 12s the best for their trial (‘mock’) examinations next week. It seems incredible that it is that time of year already and I praise our Grade 12s for adapting to the latest challenges and to their teachers for preparing them so well during this crucial year for our oldest student
It is not only our oldest students who have academic prowess in mind. I was delighted to offer a Head’s Commendation to Atharv S (3E). Atharv gained first place in both levels of a national competition organized by Abacus, for mental arithmetic. He competed against children from twenty-two centers across India and finished top. We are very proud of Atharv, who was invited to my office and accepted his Commendation modestly.
To continue the academic theme, two teams from the Primary School have made it past the initial round of the GEMS Global Innovation Challenge 2022 for the juniors division. They will be presenting their ideas via Zoom this Saturday on a closed link. One team, from Grade 5, consisting of Lucia G (5B) and Nazah F (5C), are presenting their O.T.C. (Ocean Trash Collector). This is a wonderful idea that incentivizes cargo ships to collect ocean garbage using green energy. Our second team, from Grade 3, consists of Halle M (3D), Naya E (3D), Serena M (3E) and Atharv S (3E). They will be presenting their idea for an app called Food Gems which will allow users to engage in their health in a more meaningful and social way. My thanks to Ms. Aranyani, Mr Javier and Ms Leigh-Anne for coaching these students so effectively.
For the benefit of those who are confused and think that the absence of PE classes is a GIS decision; it is not. KHDA has decided that PE classes cannot go ahead in schools right now. We wait to hear updates. However, please do view the poster below as you scroll down, which Mr. Barry has shared.
Finally, despite the current challenges, I am pleased to say that our students are again proving themselves resourceful and adaptable, positive and dynamic.
Kind regards, thank you for your support, and have a good weekend,
Simon Herbert
