Week Twenty One - January 21st 2022
Dear Parents & Guardians
Thank you all so much for your diligence with monitoring your children’s health this week. We have been inundated with emails and calls seeking clarification regarding various scenarios associated with the current situation. To address some of the more common queries, please note:
Should your child be considered a close contact (based on current DHA guidelines), you will be contacted from our clinic immediately.
Unlike last year, current guidelines do not allow parents to choose that their child will access their schooling remotely. As outlined in last week’s newsletter, there are very clear requirements for students to qualify for remote learning overseen by KHDA.
While the beginning of the new year has been somewhat unpredictable, one thing that has persisted are the exams for our most senior students. Our Grade 12 cohort will sit for the trial examinations commencing on Monday. We know that they have been preparing for these for many, many months, if not years. Many families have endured the extra anxiety and grumpiness that goes hand in hand with a teenager about to sit exams that can dictate their future pathways.
One of our cultural pillars is ambition for all. We are well aware, and fully support, that success for each and every young person will be different. My personal ambition for all, is that every student genuinely tried their absolute best, that all suitable and appropriate support was deployed to assist them to achieve this best. Grade 12’s I, and the rest of the staff, wish you well – you can do this Class of 2022!
My questions to all of our other students, Grade 6 through to Grade 11, is, what is your ambition? What are you doing right now to help set yourself up for success in the future? Are you reaching out to your teachers when you were absent from class? Or did not fully understand something? Are you submitting your work on time? Are you completing your work to the best of your ability? Are you being proactive with regard to your learning? It is never too early to start this planning. Excellence is hard work!
It is for this reason, that we will commence our Grade 10 to Grade 11 transition process this week. Students in Grade 10 will participate in an online Information session with Ms Mariona (CP Coordinator) and Mr Adam (DP Coordinator) where they will hear about the subject groupings & offerings moving into Grade 11. This will be followed up by a ConnectEd parent session on Wednesday. We encourage all parents with students in Grade 9 and 10 to participate, where you will hear more about the move to senior school.
Finally, this week, we celebrate Arabic language Day. Thank you to Ms Amineh and her team, Jana Alballany and Mohammed Alnasrawi for the work dedicated to this important day. Arabic Language Day is normally celebrated in December while we are on winter break, hence why we celebrated it a little later than usual. Below you will find some further information regarding this event.
Best wishes to all of our families, please stay safe.

International Arabic Language Day is celebrated annually on the 18th of December to celebrate the beautiful language which is the mother tongue that joins Arab speakers together from different cultures and backgrounds. GIS goes out of its way every year to make sure that the Arabic language is practiced and celebrated not just on this day but all through out the year. This year we have put together a challenge for our staff and teachers where we taught them some Arabic phrases and words! We also interviewed them about their understanding of Arabic and all they have learnt so far. It was a great opportunity to have our teachers and staff celebrate our mother tongue with us in these past few days!

As per a recent KHDA announcement the discontinuation of all face-to-face Extra Curricular Activities and PE lessons have been extended until February 1st. This includes squad training sessions, assemblies and events. These rules are in place to minimize the spread of Covid-19, and to ensure that students are still able to benefit from face-to-face learning.
If you have already signed up for an ECA for Term 2 then you will remain registered when ECAs recommence in February. Parents who have signed up and paid for an externally provided activity can expect to hear from the provider directly.
In the meantime, please take a look at our GIS Well-being website, which has a range of extracurricular resources for all ages. These include workouts, mindfulness activities, academic websites, arts, drama and more.
Kind Regards,
Barry McHugh

Mr Lewis says’ it was a pleasure to see students harness their creativity and technical skills in the making of the music videos. Students should be proud of the outstanding product they have produced.’
Grade 9 have been inquiring into all types of health and how to make healthy choices. They created informative and persuasive posters about health to showcase their language skills and also their graphic design skills!
This week our students have been producing their own news bulletin to share their learning about natural hazards. We look forward to sharing some of their excellent work soon.
Grade 10 students completed a relationship mapping activity this week. The purpose of this activity was for us to see which students have positive relationships and feel connected within our school, as well as recognizing students, that we perceive as “at-risk” of being lonely. The students filled in slips with words that describe them, things that make them happy or sad, compliments they got, something they do for fun, and then shared this information with three others in the class with whom they do not typically spend time.
Students from the Design subject worked on Robotics this week. The focus of this was to improve their programming skills, students mainly used python coding to archive the task. Yr 6 were introduced with Challenge TASK, this week they were working on Task 1 that is to complete the MAP. Yr 7 were working on Line Following technique using Color Sensors. Yussuf from 7C completed his line following task and he used the rest of the class time to build a Robotic ARM. Yr 8 completed building a TETRIX robot and tried some basic code with their robot such as Drive Forward and making a semicircle.
