Week Nineteen - January 7th 2022
Welcome to 2022!
New year to all of our GIS families. It certainly is not the start of the year that we were hoping for! However, I would like to praise and thank our students for the way they have approached this last week online. Teachers have been feeding back that the majority of students are in class and ready to learn at the start of each lesson, which is wonderful to hear. Parents, you will find, further on in the newsletter, expectations with regard to online learning considering we will be continuing learning remotely for another week.
Similarly, our students deserve praise for the smooth transition to the new working week. A lot of work went on behind the scenes to generate a new timetable for the start of the year, and our students have demonstrated resilience and flexibility with this change. Well done to all!
While it is not our place as a school to advise who students should or should not socialize with, we ask parents to be a little extra vigilant at this time. We have multiple students having tested positive recently, many from the same year group. Our Grade 12 students will be sitting for the trial IBDP examinations starting on Jan 24th. It is vital for their future that they have an opportunity to sit these examinations, as we are unsure what lies ahead in this regard (last year exams were cancelled if you remember). Therefore, we ask that students limit unnecessary social situations in coming weeks as a preventative measure.
The start of a new year presents a good opportunity for students to reflect on their progress and attitude to learning prior to the Winter Break. We encourage you to chat to your son or daughter about how they feel they have performed so far this academic year. Should they acknowledge that there is an opportunity for improvement, now is the time for them to start working on this. Assessment in the IB is accumulative. Therefore, all summative assessments conducted throughout the year are used to generate an overall grade. This allows students more than one opportunity to show their understanding of each criteria. Reports will be sent home to parents in the second week of February, so there is still time for students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.
So, as our first Monday to Friday school week draws to a close, thank you for your patience with the recent changes. Your support is very much appreciated. Enjoy the extra weekend time with your family and please do all remain safe.

Branislav Lukic, Pranay Mathur, Radiator Hassan, Milena Flores-Benita, Ameera Goyal, Albert Klintell, Anissa Bouchouh, Mazin Bayoumi, Ashaz Aslam, Vlad Gherghescu, Chayce Van Deventer, Ananya Tanna, Zaineb Zouaoui, Rachid Hirane, Pranay Neeraj, Suhani Kothari, Yazan Zidan, Ahmed Idris, Fatima Mahmoud, Sophia Abouaid, Daniela Franquet, Mina Ramadan, Lara El Azzi, Sara Tuohino, & James Labans.
Students have started this new term looking at the themes of identity and celebrating the diversity we have at GIS. They looked at French and Spanish speaking people and then explored their own identities.
This week, grade 6 students were preparing to address 3 of the 5 criterion D strands in mathematics. They had to identify the relevant elements of a situation, select math strategies to use and then apply these strategies correctly to solve the problem. Students were collaborating well and each took on a role in their groups.
Grade 10 Standard students submitted their Criterion CD project on “Explain a mathematical topic of your choice and give examples why you would need this in real life?” The challenge was how to structure and how to communicate the topic in an appropriate way. It was incredible and delighting to see how much passion and effort students showed. Please look at these pictures submitted by Mina Ramadan and her work about logarithms.
Marina discussed applications of quadratic equations and found an idea on how to improve the revenue of a company.
In Grade 9 students were challenged by redesigning a room of their choice. Not only graphical design skills were addressed but also the mathematics needed to do all the calculations for new furniture, installations, etc. I am speechless about the outcome that some students submitted, how much love and passion they put into this project by putting together a 3D view of the redesigned cafeteria. I am sure that you will agree that Ahmed did a fantastic job.
Remote learning will not stop us continuing our unit on mime in Grade 8. Students are developing the basic mime techniques in this unit, focusing on the four elements of face, body, space and props. They will then move forward to create their own group mime acts. This is all inspired by Marcel Marceau, a mime artist the students have been inquiring into. The photo below shows a student showcasing his mime. Can you guess what he doing?
Students were learning about Identity-based discrimination, including bullying and bias. They made new year resolution to:
Develop positive self-identities and a sense of belonging
Supporting each other to explore and value our own identities and those of their peers
Developing group identities
Ensuring everyone feels safe and a sense of belonging at GIS
Our Grade Level WhatsApp Groups offer parents another means to remain informed key events and developments in the secondary school. Parents can join the relevant groups by scanning the QR codes below. While we have a temporary admin for the Grade 8 WhatsApp group, we are seeking a permanent replacement. If you would like to volunteer your support, please complete this brief Google Form.
