Week Nineteen - January 7th 2022
Dear Primary School Parents,
A warm welcome back from the winter break. I hope and trust that you have all had a chance to connect and relax over the holiday. I wish you all much health, peace and prosperity in 2022. I would also welcome those families new to GIS. We look forward to having you on campus soon. Please remember to access the resource page for new families.
Despite the unlikely start to term 2 in remote learning, we remain very excited about upcoming learning and events for this term With the change to the school week in the UAE beginning January 1st, we ask that you check your child's class pages for any class schedule changes. You will notice some events have shifted from Sunday to Monday including the upcoming parent-teacher conferences -(PTC's) .
We have just received confirmation from KHDA that learning will continue remotely next week. We really hope to have the children back to school safely as quick as possible. In the meantime, we have a hardworking team of teaching staff, committed to keeping learning happening remotely. Please reach out to your homeroom teachers with any issues or questions you may have. Tech trouble shooting can benefit from this resource page or by contacting ICT directly.

While we are so pleased that the technology and resources are available in our community so that our dedicated teachers and students are able to continue learning from a distance, it is important that we understand the social and emotional needs children may face during this time.
For many, this period might bring back difficult memories from previous experiences. Fear of the unknown and overall anxiety might increase. Please notice these feelings and reactions and take care of yourself and those around you.
We all need and crave human interaction. Make sure your child attends and participates as much as possible when they have opportunities to engage in live lessons, play sessions and activities. Even if the conditions are not ideal, children will benefit from checking in with peers and significant adults in their lives both at home and from school.
Check out the Coordinator’s Corner this week with insightful tips about Wellbeing during remote learning. Remember that we are in it together, one step at a time!
As always, I am available to meet with parents and students for social and emotional support. You can submit a PYP Counselor Contact Form (parents) or email me directly at c.barboza_gis@gemsedu.com.

Maintaining wellbeing during remote
learning and beyond
This week KG2 have been continuing to explore how 'Living things share the same basic needs and depend on each other'. Their inquies this week have focused on the characteristics of living things. In live lessons, students have been finding out more about the parts of a plant and how to classify something as 'living'. In language lessons, students have read books related to living and non-living things as well as applying their sound knowledge to write simple words and sentences about their favourite animal. Math investigations this week focused on measurement, using a variety of tools to measure with accuracy.
Applying writing skills to share information on a favourite animal
Investigating the growth of a seed
Classifying to determine living or non-living
Applying reading skills to find out about animals
