Week Eleven - November 19th 2020
Dear Parents,
I am delighted that our primary and secondary Arabic departments are encouraging students to participate in UNESCO’s World Arabic Language Day on 18th December. Although we shall be on holiday then, on Wednesday 18th November, GEMS launched a ‘GEMS Reads in Arabic’ campaign to celebrate the joy of reading. Ms Amina and Mr Magid have plenty of great ideas, including social posts of parents reading to their children, special reading slots in lessons, ‘selfies’ taken by children reading in all sorts of interesting places, certificates for best book review, plays or poems created from a book, scenes or character illustration, and even videos from parents of reading activities (please send clips to Ms Amina or Mr Magid)!
Thanks to Ms. Deema (GEMS Vice President for Arabic and Islamic), all our students already receive free access to over 700 digital children’s books in Arabic via the platform ‘Little Thinking Minds’, in addition to an exclusive 25% discount from Kalimat Group on all children’s Arabic books. We will also have four e-story telling events by renowned Emirati and Arabic children’s authors that we can access for free exclusively. So, happy reading and don’t forget to post!
Today we were very pleased to welcome Ms. Elmarie Venter to our school. Ms. Elmarie is the GEMS Chief Enrolment, Marketing, Communications and Corporate Relations. Her comments on GIS staff, students and parents were very positive and I would like to thank her for visiting us and also thank our Front of House Team for their collaboration with Ms. Elmarie and the GEMS Marketing and Communications teams. This has led to close alignment and excellent relations.
Despite the social distancing, meticulous hygiene routines and strict adherence to all health measures, our students are still able to seek out the fun in school life. This week, to celebrate International Children’s Day, along with raising awareness of issues facing children around the world, Grade 11 students Nourhan I and Akshita K organized a staff baby photos quiz. I hope mine don’t make it beyond the confines of GIS!
Our GISPA team has also been active, encouraging children and staff to wear a moustache on their mask on Wednesday as part of ‘Movember’, which is devoted to men’s health issues. Vice President of GISPA, Isabelle A, led the way with a wonderfully floral display!
Finally, another thank you to all the parents who have taken a few minutes to complete the survey. This is very much appreciated. There is still time, if you haven’t yet!
May I wish you all a restful weekend – and please don’t forget to look at the primary and secondary sections of this newsletter (one or two parents hadn’t realized we had further sections).
Kind Regards,
Simon Herbert

The gradual recommencement of Sport Squads and Early Academies at GIS have been a great success. We now have both football and basketball squads training at various age levels.
We have also been supported by various external providers in offering Athletics, Dance & Basketball with PYP Football commencing next week.
All squads and Early Academies are strictly following Dubai Sports Council protocol and regulations.
Congratulations to our two Grade 4 students, who both finished within the top 3 in their age category in the DASSA 1km virtual race. Over 750 students entered the virtual competition, so this is an amazing achievement! Both students have been invited to a special training session with Olympian Charlie Grice. Pictured above are Zakaria and Alisa being presented with their DASSA certificate.
