Week one - September 3rd 2020
Welcome back to school and welcome to all our new families!
Although the start to this school year has been like no other, our community has certainly raised to the challenge! Our focus has been to ensure each child feels safe, connected and challenged as we embark on this new adventure together.
With health and safety as our first priority, the students and teachers have adapted well to our new environment. Whether your child is currently learning on-campus or through remote access, our situation continues to provide learning opportunities to build the traits of resilience and adaptability.
This first week has challenged staff and students to find a new normal for learning and has connected us in new ways. What I have most learned through this process is how much I appreciate the expertise our teachers bring to GIS, the ways in which our students have shown up ready to learn and grow, and an overall appreciation for the positivity of our community. What I MOST appreciate about GIS is how even under circumstances we have never experienced we are still a learning and caring community.
Have a wonderful first weekend. We look forward to welcoming you back to week two on Sunday.

Self portraits in grade 1
A heartfelt thank-you for all parents this week. The drop and pick up procedures have been smooth and are becoming even more efficient with each day.
A few clarifications:
pick up and drop off is to the allocated gate based on house color
Dismissal is at 2:30 or 2:40 (12:30 for first 2 weeks in PK, KG1, KG2/optional)
Parents with children grade 1 and under can enter school to pick up child(10 min max)
All other parents meet their child outside the school at the gate
Late Dismissal is now at the main entrance (gate 4) at 3:30 for all house colors, due to a low number of students requiring it.
Teacher supervision is available only at the given dismissal time. Therefore PYP students that are not picked up at the 2:30/40 dismissal will be returned to their classroom until the 3:30 dismissal.
Signing my child out during the day
If you must pick your child up during the school day, please inform your homeroom teacher before 8am. In emergency cases, call the school reception +971 4 339 6200. All students to be signed out during the day, must meet their parent at the front entrance (gate 4).

Even our youngest learners benefit from being a part of the global IB network. Since its inception, the International Baccalaureate Organization has aimed to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people “to help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect”.
This has never been more true than the current uncertain circumstances brought on by the Covid pandemic. The IB Learner attributes have instilled a deep resilience in the students and allows them to be well prepared for what lies ahead, while remaining compassionate towards the community.
What does it mean to be knowledgeable, principled, reflective, open minded, balanced and caring through times of global challenge? How can we be thinkers, communicators, and risk takers whether we are learning from school or at home? How do our personal actions support collective action?
Young children are likely to feel empowered by contributing to a common goal. "By wearing a mask, you’re protecting your friends from getting any of your germs, and the masks they wear are protecting you — it’s the principled thing to do.’” PYP students are gaining a better understanding of taking care of others. They are caring and want to do the right thing, which is why framing the conversation like this may help them get on board.
The flexibility and dynamism of IB curriculum enables educational processes to operate within new teaching and learning environments. The IB pedagogical approach fosters innovative methodology and prepares students to face any learning obstacles they might come across
