Week Three - September 16th 2021
Dear Primary School Parents,
We've had a fun and exciting week in the primary school with the international "Dot Day" and student council and house captain leadership applications. Risk taking is an important profile for an IB student and I am so impressed to see students at GIS show off how courageous and creative they can be.
Next week, students will take part in individual goal setting conferences with their parent(s) and teacher. There is no regular school on Sunday and Monday. This is a great opportunity to meet and discuss the personalized approach to the upcoming year.
On Wednesday, we are excited to welcome new parents, and those parents wanting a refresher on the components of the IB Primary Years Programme and what sets it apart from other education models. This virtual session is led by our programme coordinators and is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 9 am.
Homework is a hot topic and primary schools and we have been very specific on its role in the primary school at GIS. Take some time to view the slides and read through the agreements to understand the how and why of home learning and homework.
Please see below for important reminders and our weekly "peek into learning"!
Don't forget to check your class pages each week for updates and reminders from your child's teacher!
What are goal setting conferences?
During this conference you will discuss a teacher, parent and student identified goal. Discussion will help to solidify goals and ensure parents, teacher and child fully understand the personalized goals. Teacher goals could include a Math, Language or Personal (PSPE) goal and will also include an overarching Approaches to Learning (ATL) goal. Teacher goals are informed by knowledge of the curriculum, baseline data and observations as students have settled into their new classes.
Can I meet with single subject teachers?
Our Single Subject Teachers (Art, Music, PE, Arabic, Islamic) will be available for 10-minute individual meet up’s. Please be aware that slots are available on a first come basis and slots may fill quickly. At these sessions, you are invited to share something specific about your child and ask any pending questions you might have from Back to School Night. These are optional and need to be signed up for separately using the same link by selecting the specific teacher you would like to meet with.
How do I join the conferences?
1) Sign up for your homeroom conference (and optional single subject) through the below link
2) Access the specific teachers meeting links at the time of your meeting. Please be on time. All virtual links for teachers will be shared on your class webpage.
Every Second Wednesday
What's in the mystery bag?
Grade one have been tuning in to their first Math unit, focusing on one-to-one correspondence and counting on. Students were given a mystery bag and the instructions to explore what's inside and count their items. Students were guided to reflect on how they count, the different strategies they used and why they might have different answers. This will lead to more investigations over the coming weeks into number and counting.
