Week Forteen- November 30th 2022
Dear Parents & Guardians,
With a short week behind us, I would like to thank all of our staff and students who were involved in National Day celebrations. It was so wonderful to come together as a community on Monday morning to enjoy the celebrations. I know that there were some very nervous performers prior to the event, but their demonstration of being a risk taker was very well received. Well done to all involved.
Next week we will celebrate Winterfest. In Homeroom students have been busy preparing their stalls. The event will run from 3:30 to 6:30 on Dec 8th. The evening will consist of GIS Has Talent, a book fair, Homeroom stalls and food trucks. Our students have worked hard on the preparations, so we hope that you will join us for this event.
Term One reports will also be sent home at the end of next week. Parents will note that the look of the report has been changed from previous years. We believe that the enhancements will provide more detailed information to parents. We do ask that you chat to your son/daughter regarding their performance this term, and establish goals for the upcoming term. This is especially significant for students in Grade 10, as the subject selection process for Grade 11 will commence in January.
Finally I would like to wish all of our families a wonderful National Day. Enjoy the extra long weekend and see you all next week.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
December 8 Winterfest
December 9 Term 1 Report published | End of term 1
Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

Students have been learning about cells and they were set the task to make models of plant and animal cells.. 6B also had the opportunity to show their models off to DP2 Biology group and test their knowledge with older students in the group. This was a great opportunity for both DP2 students to realise how far their learning has come and for grade 6 students to see DP2 students as role models. I was amazed by all the models made and the thought and effort that had gone into making the models and the creative thinking that had gone into making the cells. Some cells were made from a mixture of fruit and candy, some were made from 3D printing, lentils, foam and everyday household objects, and even cakes!

Service as Action in MYP
Grade 10 Integrated Humanities students inspired by their recent unit on Urbanization completed service as action in their community.
Kai Stephen, Beau Mc Nally, and Bari Shasho did a beach clean up in JBR, identifying that pollution is an impact of Urbanization.

Grade 11
GIS is committed to students learning about Academic Honesty.
A session on what Academic Honesty entails and why it is important is presented to all students in the secondary beginning with Grade 6. Grade 11 had the opportunity to learn about its importance during their core session. In addition, students were given a chance to collaborate and determine why certain scenarios violate the definition of scholarly research. Following the Academic Honesty Session, students were given a chance to demonstrate what they learned by applying their newfound knowledge to correctly identifying real-world examples of what defined Academic Dishonesty, alongside demonstrating their ability to correctly cite their sources.
Homeroom begins at 8:10am, following the UAE national anthem.
students are considered late if they arrive to class after the anthem.
Monday to Thursday: 3:15pm
Friday: 11:40am
Please arrange for students to be collected promptly after dismissal. Secondary students are not permitted to gather inside the Main Reception or Slices Cafeteria while awaiting collection. They may wait in the adjacent courtyard or the outdoor area at the front of the school, being careful not to block doorways.
*Parents may enter the school campus via Gate 4, Gate 6 and Gate 8.

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
