Week Eight - October 27th, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
You will receive another letter from me this week, with exciting news about the construction of a new sports hall (which was previously an old outdoor Astro, usually out of action for 5 months of the year, owing to the heat). This has been long in the planning and will benefit our students and their sports provision hugely. The construction cannot wait until the summer holidays; our swimming pool area will be affected, for health and safety reasons, during the major construction phase. You will also hear from the Primary and Secondary School leadership teams with regard to curricular changes during this construction phase.
On Monday, our teachers excelled themselves during a professional development day. In Primary and in Secondary, teachers and invited guests provided expert guidance to other teachers, so we were truly learning from each other. Subjects ranged from pastoral care, coding, differentiation in EAL, to positive discipline and speech therapy. My thanks to Ms Maya, Ms Niamh and Ms Sandy for organizing the day for both schools, and to all our amazing presenters.
Ms Sandy has been busy presenting too, and her MYP ConnectEds, on ‘Service as Action’, and ‘Progress through the MYP’, have been extremely popular, with parents able to gain insights into this rigorous programme and to ask any questions they wish. My thanks to Ms Sandy for taking the time to reinforce our partnerships with parents.
UMRAH 2023
A trip to Umrah, organized by Ms Nomah, went very well during the midterm break. Here is a summary in the words of Ms Nomah: ‘Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which holds significant religious importance in Islam. It is a time for spiritual reflection and devotion for Muslims. Such journeys often provide a unique opportunity for individuals to connect with their faith and culture while also experiencing a new and enriching cultural environment. It was great to hear such positive feedback from the students during as such experiences can be transformative and memorable. The students were appreciative of the hotels, rides, bilingual guides, and city tours where they had detailed exposure to the historical sites in Islam, in both holy cities. We wish to continue this wonderful initiative on a yearly basis, inshAllah!’ Thank you very much Ms Nomah and team.
Another ‘Meet and Greet’ took place on Friday. It was wonderful to sample the tasty food from a variety of countries and to remember again what a diverse and special community of families we have here. My thanks to the Secondary Leadership Team, Ms Irasa and her team of homeroom teachers and of course to all families who joined and brought the delicacies!
Finally, a traffic update. Thank you for your support and also your appreciation of the leadership teams who have been assessing traffic flow recently. It is important that we assess every change to drop-off and pick-up routines, both for our school and our neighboring schools. I am fully aware that we organized a survey and that the results would allow for a stagger of timings. However, before jumping to this, we are reviewing the effects of the WEK change to entry route, and also our new drop-off options for Secondary School parents. At present, we have seen a separation of the schools’ traffic, and we shall continue to monitor. I would like to stress to all Secondary School parents again: please do not turn right at the entry roundabout. Turn left or go straight ahead. You now have two drop-off options, one at the WEK drop-off zone, which means you can then exit via Al Marabea, or through the middle road (straight ahead at the roundabout), allowing you to drop at Gate 10 and leave directly onto Al Khail Road. Please do not turn right, as you will then join our Primary School traffic, which will add to delays. Thank you for your attention to this.
Kind regards,
