Week Five - September 27th, 2024
Grades 6-12
Ensuring Additional Support for All Students.
This academic year we are launching a new support initiative for all students at GIS. Academic Priority is a system of academic support for students that they can access in addition to their regular classes across all departments.
Each department holds a session once a week. The exact timings and locations for each department can be found on the Academic Priority Schedule posted below. This is also available on ManageBac.
Academic priority is staffed by teachers from the departments, ensuring that students have access to the teachers they need. Any student who needs additional support, has a question or just wants to discuss a particular topic is welcome at Academic Priority. There are no fixed topics for a session. The teacher will provide support based on the individual student’s needs on a particular day.
In addition, teachers make themselves available to any student who needs support whenever possible. We are looking forward to the impact Academic Priority will have on our students progress and attainment.
Grades 8 and 10
This blessed month has brought both knowledge and celebration to our students. Congratulations to Ms. Michaela and Grade 8G students, for winning the Advisory quiz on the "Birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)." They were treated with sweet treats. Their preparation, enthusiasm, and teamwork truly shined through as they navigated questions about the life and teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) during this special time of reflection and remembrance.
Meanwhile, Grade 10 students are engaging in a deeper reflection as they present their research on the four stories included in Surah al-Kahf. These timeless stories—highlighting themes of faith, perseverance, and the trials of life—offer our students an opportunity to explore how these lessons remain relevant in today’s world.
As our students grow in knowledge and character, these activities help them deepen their connection to both Islamic history and the wisdom found within the Quran.
Grades 6-10
We want to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who auditioned for Peter Pan Jr.! The level of talent we witnessed last week was truly spectacular, and each of you made our job incredibly difficult in the best way possible. Your passion, energy, and dedication shone through, and we are so grateful for your time and effort.
Congratulations to all who have been cast! We can't wait to start this exciting journey together, and we know that this production is going to be something truly magical. Our first rehearsal will begin on Tuesday 1st October from 3:20pm-4:20pm in the Black Box.
Thank you again to everyone for sharing your amazing talents with us!
Grades 8 and 9
Students are learning about each other’s countries, how to write about themselves and where they are from.
Grade 8
Our Grade 8 students are diving into the key concept of Perspectives by exploring the fascinating world of color psychology. Through this study, they are learning how different colors can influence emotions, behavior, and viewpoints. Using their communication skills, the students collaborated in a creative activity called "Group Shape," where they worked together to visually express the varying perspectives we have. This hands-on approach is helping them deepen their understanding of how we see and interpret the world around us. This will in turn help them prepare for their upcoming script study of Anxiety is Orange by Lindsay Price.
Grade 9
In Grade 9 we have just completed a unit in Moral, Social and Cultural Studies called: “Being An Active Citizen”. We linked our studies to the Sustainable Development Goals and Service as Action.
One of the activities in the unit asked students to: Identify people you know who have helped a community you are a part of, and what they did. I would like to share a few responses:
“Ms. Anrie has helped my school community because she initiates recycling drives every year. She is strong, determined and dedicated.”
“An example of someone who helps the community is my mother. When we lived in Angola she did charity work, made donations and even taught Math to children in the villages for free. And, when we lived in Malaysia she volunteered at a refugee school where she taught Math.”
“Mr. Simon works every day to try and make the school a better environment.”
Students made posters of outstanding Emirati Citizens and also created brochures to spread awareness of the organizations around us that do good work.
