Week Thirty Seven - June 23rd, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Dear Parents/Guardians and students,
Welcome to the final week of the 2022/23 Academic Year. What a week it has been!
Congratulations to Mr Sujay and a small group of students (Samridhi, Moon, Fatima, Musa, Jasim and Lucjan) who participated in a Tech fest, Di@fest earlier this week. Two remarkable teams showcased their exceptional programming skills and made us immensely proud. A significant milestone was achieved as our all-girls team (Samridhi, Moon and Fatima ) from Grade 8 who participated in the Drone Programming interschool championship for the very first time. This was a first for the girls, who had never done drone programming before. Their hard work and determination paid off, as they emerged victorious, securing an impressive 3rd position among ten schools from Dubai.
In addition, Team two ( Musa, Jasim, Lucjan ) displayed their engineering finesse in the intense battle bots of Robot Competition, where they showcased their skills and resilience. Despite tough competition, they showcased their expertise and claimed a commendable 5th position. Well done to all involved!
I would also like to congratulate all of our award winners who were celebrated this week at the Secondary Award evenings and the Sports Star Awards. Your efforts this year have been outstanding and you should be very proud. However, all of you are achieving in some area of your life, we have witnessed this throughout the year. To those of you who arrived to school each day on time; who wore the GIS uniform with pride; who participated in an ECA; who joined a sports team; who received some House points; and who achieved your goals set at the beginning of the year; I am proud of you! Your teachers are proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself. Success comes in all varieties, and your progress this year, is a success. Well done to each and every one of you.
On the topic of success, I need to highlight Aryan Modha and his cricket accomplishments. Aryan recently competed in the U16 Emirates Cup tournament and was declared the Best Bowler of the tournament, taking 9 wickets. What an outstanding award to win!
On a lighter note, it was wonderful for each grade to come together this week to celebrate the year. There are so many talented students, whose confidence impresses me each and every day. A heartfelt thanks to every Grade leader who, all year, have been supporting, guiding and cheering each student on. The level of support offered from Mr Zulk, Ms Hoda, Mr Chris, Mr Dexter, Mr Conor, Mr Lewis & Ms Amanda E is exceptional.
Likewise, our teachers, LSA’s and TA’s give so much of themselves to ensure that students are progressing, on track and successful. Guided by our Heads of Department and Inclusion Team, we are very lucky to have the excellent staff that we have. Thank you all.
As is normal in a secondary school, a few students and staff will move on today, off to great adventures, having developed life long friendships at GIS. We wish you well and safe travels. You will always be a part of this wonderful school and we look forward to welcoming you back onto campus in the future.
And, with that, thank you parents, for entrusting us with your children. Your support and feedback is appreciated and valued.
I wish you a relaxing and enjoyable summer break.
Stay safe wherever you may be travelling to.
Best wishes
Amanda Murphy
IMPORTANT DATES FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
June 26 Last day of school (students will be dismissed at 12pm)
Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.

To finish the year, grade 10 textiles students were challenged in groups to create an outfit out of 100% recycled or reused products in only 6! This challenged students to collaborate with their group members and to think outside the box! All students who participated were very happy with what they were able to achieve in such a short amount of time. Well done grade 10!
Grade 6
In a thrilling activity, Grade 6 students took on the role of forensic scientists, utilizing their STEM skills to analyze their own fingerprints and solve a forensic crime. They began by learning about fingerprint patterns and identifying their own unique prints. Armed with this knowledge, the students formed teams and were presented with a simulated crime scene. They analyzed fingerprints to identify the culprit. Through this engaging experience, the students developed problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for the application of science in real-life scenarios.

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
