Week Thirty Seven - June 23rd, 2023
Dear Parents,
I hope you are well.
Some wonderful news to start this week’s newsletter. GIS has reached the finalist stages in three categories of SchoolsCompared.com Top Schools awards 2023-24! Only two other GEMS schools have made it to three finals. We are so pleased for our whole community and extremely proud that our work and dynamic environment have been recognized. Please note that one of the categories is for Best IB Curriculum School in the UAE. Overall winners will be announced in September.
This week has been full of Award Ceremonies and I have enjoyed every one of them. Our two Sports Awards evenings, for Primary and Secondary School, really illustrated the breadth and depth of our students’ talents. Well done to all winners and those who have shown excellent commitment and sportsmanship throughout the year. My thanks to Mr Barry and our sports departments for the organization of the events.
The Secondary School Academic Awards took place in two sessions on Wednesday, for G6-8 and then G9-11. Both occasions were a wonderful recognition of the hard work and aspirations of so many students. My thanks to our Secondary School leadership team, teachers, TAs and LSAs for their commitment to the students’ success. I would also like to thank all the parents present for their constant support for their children’s education.
At GIS, we focus on transitional changes for our students, and therefore this week it was a delight to see how well the Grade 5s ‘stepped up’ for two days and discovered all about life in Grade 6. Ms Alisha created a passport-style booklet, ‘Flying into the MYP’ to guide the students, full of quizzes, guidance and even scavenger hunts around the secondary school building. As Ms Alisha put it, ‘The purpose of these two days was for G5 students to build connection with some of the people and places in MYP’. This certainly happened and I saw very happy students engaging in every activity and gaining confidence about joining secondary school after the summer.
These Grade 5s, led by Ms Rebekah and her wonderful team of teachers, TAs and LSAs, enjoyed a super PYP Completion event on Friday morning. We had songs, dances and musical performances from each class and speeches from Ms Kim, Ms Amanda, Ms Rebekah and myself. We are delighted that so many Grade 5 students are continuing their GIS journey and joining our secondary school next term, where their grade leader will be Mr Sean O’Regan. We look forward to seeing these students on 28th August for a transition morning.
The end of the term is drawing near, but our Arabic and Islamic teachers have shown huge dedication to continuing their learning, through a whole day’s professional development this week with an external expert. This is commendable and I know we shall reap the benefits.
Finally, I would like to thank you, our parental community, for your loyal and unwavering support throughout this year. This makes for a very special place indeed and it is much appreciated.
I look forward to welcoming new students (and all our current Grade 5s going into Grade 6) on 28th August, and all other students on 29th August.
Kind regards and have a wonderful holiday when it comes.
Thank you to all those that have donated towards the notebook and paper drive. We will keep on collecting paper until the end of Monday.
Dear Parents,
Greetings from GIS Clinic.
We wish to thank you for your continued support throughout the school year.
Please find gentle reminders from the GIS school clinic for the next academic year.
If your child has a particular health issue that requires special attention please give us detailed information about their condition. An updated medical report, prescription, and action plan from your child’s physician will be required. Please contact the Medical team before your child starts school to discuss any medical condition requiring ongoing support. This will enable us to provide continuity of care.
As a part of the health and safety of the students and a mandate from Dubai Health Authority, we request you to fill in the Medical Consent form and submit an updated colored copy of the Routine or childhood immunization/vaccination card (in English/ with official English Translation) to the school clinic before the child starts school: click here to access/download the form. Complete it and send it to us. If not returning next academic year, please collect the original vaccination card (if submitted) from the school clinic.
If you have any further queries please contact the school clinic at Clinic_gis@gemsedu.com
Enjoy your vacation and travel safely.
On Wednesday our U14 boys basketball boys topped off a brilliant season with a victory over JESS in the Division 1 3rd place playoff. This result helped them to clinch the secondary team of the year award, as they are the highest ranked team in GIS Jaguars history.
This week it was fantastic to be able to celebrate all of our Jaguar squad members at the primary and secondary sports awards. At the awards we had some amazing performances showcasing the incredible talent we have here at GIS.
Well done to all the PYP swimmers who participated in the Hamdan Final last week. It was a great pleasure to see our swimmers performing exceptionally well and achieving their personal best times. Congratulations to all the swimmers who made us proud and won some first places as well.
