Week Thirty Four - June 14th, 2024
Dear Parents,
The highlight of the week for me was the performance of the musical Aladdin by our primary students. What an entertaining evening, with songs, choreography, wonderful acting and some skillful ad libs! The students were clearly loving it and so was the audience. It was dynamic, refreshing and fun. My thanks to Mr George, the staff team and all the students involved, on stage and the back stage crew.
My thanks to Iman BF (G10) who delivered an IB question and answer session with me, live on social media this week. Iman was very composed and gave answers from a student’s perspective on why an IB curriculum is so beneficial, the skills gained, the self-management needed, the critical thinking, creativity and the value of an IB DP or CP when applying to universities.
As the spokesperson for the IB in the GEMS Education group, I was privileged to be invited to Al Khaleej International School by the Principal/CEO and Senior Vice President of Education in GEMS, Ms Ms Ghadeer Abu-Shabat on Friday, to speak on a podcast. AKIS has just been approved to deliver the IB Diploma Programme, and I was asked to participate in a question-answer session on all aspects of the IB and the merits and benefits for students during their schooling and for the future. I would like to thank Ms Ghadeer for the kind invitation and I wish AKIS the very best for their first cohort of DP students!
Our GIS MYP coordinator, Ms Sandy, and Secondary Head of Wellbeing, Ms Alisha, have delivered a first-rate programme of transition from Grade 5 to Grade 6 for our G5 parents this week. My thanks to all involved. How informative it has been, with the excitement of all the MYP has to offer and the growing independence of the students. The programme was very well constructed, and every session involved presentations and Q and A. My thanks to those Grade 5 parents who came and recognized that GIS truly cares about the move from primary to secondary and ensures that this is a success for all.
This week we welcomed colleagues from other GEMS schools to provide a review of our teaching (pedagogy and methodology). The focus was on ambition, challenge, inclusion and learning skills. My huge thanks to Ms Tammy Jochinke and team for their hard work in conducting this review and their insightful feedback. Ms Tammy and team would like me to share that lessons were extremely engaging, the culture at GIS is respectful and fully embedded and they found our students to be so helpful, friendly, and willing to share and collaborate. This is such positive news from other educators. We shall also of course look at all areas that can be enhanced even more.
Again, my thanks to all parents who have supported the school in the recent survey and provided constructive feedback. Thank you for your balanced and perceptive approach.
Finally, may I wish you and your families a wonderful Eid Al-Adha!
عيد أضحى مبارك
Kindest regards,
Family First
This week, our student-led conferences for our Primary Students took place. This is a chance for students to share their progress and learning directly with their loved ones. These conferences encourage students to take charge of their learning, reflect on their journey, and improve their presentation skills. Families get to see their children's growth firsthand, making it a meaningful and proud moment for everyone involved.
To all the generous students and families,
A huge thank you for coming together during our sale week to show your love and support, making this Appreciation Day possible. The support staff had a wonderful lunch outing on Saturday, which wouldn't have happened without the support of the GIS community. We captured some of those moments for you to see below.
Once again, a big thank you to every single one of you.
