Week Thirty Three - June 7th, 2024
Dear Parents,
Our students are super helpful when trusted to provide guidance and Thursday was no exception, as a panel of Grade 6 ‘student-experts’ gave advice to and answered questions from Grade 5 students about the move to secondary school. This latest meeting forms part of our strategic overview. As a whole school, we are working very hard on transitions, to make these as smooth as possible and I thank all involved.
GIS has now broken the 100 nationalities barrier, with the welcome addition of new students from Ghana and Belarus, which takes the total to 101 nationalities! One of our strategic priorities for next year is ‘truly international’ so that we absolutely gain the benefits of our amazingly international environment and all that can be gained by our students, through learning about other cultures, appreciating others’ languages, and being really open-minded to learning about our peers.
Suhana B (Grade 10) created braille music sheets and braille symbols on a piano keyboard as part of her extraordinary Personal Project this year. This idea, influenced by her work with the visually impaired, was even taken up by Dubai Eye radio station. It was therefore a delight to hear that Suhana’s project has benefited one of our own students, the amazing Mashal K (Grade 3). Here in the photo is Mashal, guided by Suhana.
We are proud at GIS to have been selected as one of the GEMS schools to welcome a most distinguished visitor this week. The Right Honorable Nick Gibb, who was a member of parliament and Minister of State for Schools in the UK for over ten years, came to GIS on Friday for a tour and a discussion, as a special advisor to GEMS Education. In his career, Mr. Gibb has been responsible for introducing the English Baccalaureate, raising literacy standards and PISA outcomes in the UK and improving the educational opportunities for under-privileged children. Mr. Gibb commented to me that he thoroughly enjoyed the environment and culture at GIS and was extremely interested in our four programmes and pathways.
I enjoyed a GEMS Principals’ Conference this week. It is always so refreshing to share ideas with colleagues and learn from others. The focus of the conference was technological advances and in particular the use of AI in education. Microsoft gave excellent presentations and we ae also excited at GIS at just how accomplished our students are in cutting edge technology. Our many pathways ensure that all students will be cognitively challenged in these areas.
Finally, my thanks to all parents who have supported the school in the recent survey and provided constructive feedback. Thank you for your balanced and perceptive approach.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
