Week Three - September 13th, 2024
Dear Parents,
In our primary and secondary schools, we value a love of reading. We want our students to be critical thinkers, to question what they read, and to find a joy in literature. Our teachers and leaders encourage our students to read regularly, and we know our GIS parents support this wholeheartedly. A love of reading starts young, and the role of our Early Childhood teachers and Librarian is crucial in creating the right environment. I would therefore like to thank Ms Louise for her dedication in pursuing the creation of a library for our youngest children! We were delighted to see the Grand Opening of the GIS Early Years Library this week, and were honoured to welcome renowned Emirati children’s author, Ms Ibtisam Al-Beiti, to be with us for the occasion. Ms Ibtisam described her passion for reading and then spent the morning reading her own books to enthusiastic Early Years children.
I was also pleased to welcome Ugandan educators to our school this week. A surprise visit by a large team from Trinity College Nabbingo took place on Thursday and we immediately found time for these guests, who asked me about the curriculum, use of digital devices in teaching and how we reported progress. It was wonderful to hear about their 82-year-old school for girls and to share ideas.
This week I realized just how hard it has been for our teachers and our students, during the hottest days of summer. Children really need exercise and a chance to run around, so it has been a challenge to keep them inside and I commend the teachers for facilitating this through wonderful ideas. I enjoyed playing chess with our Grade 5s!
The Personal Project is a pivotal aspect of Grade 10, making it crucial for supervisors, parents, and students to be well-informed and fully supportive. I would like to extend my gratitude to Ms. Sangita for her leadership, Ms. Sandy for presenting to the parents, and to the Grade 10 parents for their enthusiasm. This year’s Grade 10 cohort has started with great energy and we eagerly look forward to their project exhibition later this year.
Thank you for your positive feedback on the improvements to our facilities. I thought you might enjoy a short video showcasing the enhancements at GIS! The sports hall will soon be completed, and the swimming pool will be re-commissioned shortly. I truly appreciate your patience. Please see the video below.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
