ISSUE 31: There's Just Not Enough Time
As the final weeks of the school year approach, many students find themselves uttering the same
phrase: “There’s just not enough time.” With end-of-year exams, assignment deadlines, and the anticipation of a well-earned summer break all converging at once, it’s no wonder that stress levels begin to rise and time feels like it’s slipping away.
The feeling of being overwhelmed during busy periods is common, especially in high-performing environments like ours. Research tells us that when students experience high levels of academic pressure, their ability to manage time effectively can become compromised (Carter, 2020). The result? A cycle of procrastination, heightened anxiety, and an even greater sense that there simply isn’t enough time.
So what can we do?
Firstly, it’s important to remind our students that feeling busy is not the same as being productive. Studies have shown that those who schedule their time intentionally—breaking large tasks into smaller, manageable goals—are more likely to succeed and feel less overwhelmed (Macan et al., 1990). At GIS, we encourage students to use tools like weekly planners, time-blocking techniques, and prioritisation matrices to take control of their time rather than letting it control them.
Secondly, rest is not a reward—it’s a requirement. As paradoxical as it may seem, taking breaks actually improves focus and efficiency (Pope, 2021). Students should be reminded that making space for rest, movement, and connection with others isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of good strategy.
And finally, self-compassion matters. As we approach exam season, students should be encouraged to set realistic expectations for themselves, seek help when needed, and recognise that their worth is not defined by grades alone. As adults, we can model this by celebrating progress, effort, and resilience—not just outcomes.
As time ticks away toward the end of term, let’s equip our students with the strategies and support they need to thrive under pressure. Because while time may be limited, how we use it makes all the difference.
