Week Twenty-Nine - April 28th, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Welcome to another week at GIS,
I do hope you appreciated the recent Eid break and that it was a time for you to enjoy the company of your loved ones. Many thanks to Ms Nomah and Mr Hussein for welcoming us back on Monday morning with a wonderful Eid celebration. It was great to see and hear so many community members enjoying the festivities. Our Islamic department also recognized the hard work of our students on Thursday morning when we held our Ramadan Award Ceremony. Congratulations to all of the students who received an award, what a wonderful example of ambition!
Thanks also to Ms Terri, our Librarian, who has worked with many Grade 11 students to celebrate Poetry Week. She was instrumental in having some of our older students work with our younger students in bring poetry to life. I know that Ms Terri has many great projects planned for the Library, so watch this space for other initiatives!
It was terrific to see parents attending the ConnectEd hosted by Ms Hannah, Ms Raquel and Mr Nic this week. The topic was ‘Safeguarding’, and it is by far the most important priority in our school. Ensuring that every child feels safe, feels connected and feels valued, is vital for academic success. Therefore, I do urge you to view the presentation included below, should you have missed the presentation this week.
Ambition and excellence do not just happen in the classroom. There have been a few students recently who have achieved some outstanding success in the sports arena. Therefore, I would like to congratulate:
- Ishir Mehta (8F) who recently competed in two tennis tournaments in India where he finished in the quarter finals and as a runner up respectively!
- Grayson Corbin (7D) and his teammates were recently crowned divisional champions in the Dubai Little League. The Gray Camels (U14) went undefeated in their division. What an awesome achievement!
- The GIS U15 boys cricket team and Mr Sujay who won their cricket game this week
Finally, this week, I would like to wish our Grade 12 students the best of luck for the IB global exams which commence today. Our oldest students have been preparing for these for many years and we have every confidence that they will reap the rewards of their hard work. Godo luck everyone – You’ve got this!
Best wishes
Amanda

Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

We are excited to update you on our recent Arabic lessons, which have been focused on linking our learning to the IB learner profile. This week, we have been highlighting the attribute of "knowledgeable," which involves a deep understanding of concepts and the ability to apply them to real-life situations.
We are delighted to announce that many students in our Arabic classes were awarded certificates this week for demonstrating their knowledge and understanding. These students have shown a strong commitment to their learning and have written notes in Arabic to reflect on how they apply their newfound knowledge.
We are proud of our students' achievements and would like to share some photos of them receiving their certificates. These images capture the joy and excitement of the students and serve as a testament to their hard work and dedication.
We believe that linking our Arabic lessons to the IB learner profile is essential in nurturing well-rounded students who are prepared for future success. We look forward to continuing to develop our students' personal attributes as we strive towards excellence in education.

Grade 9 students have been exploring characters from the script ‘Hoodie’ through monologue work, delving deeper into the minds and lives of these characters. Students created their own scripts, and performed these monologues with great confidence and creativity.
Grade 12
The grade 12's completed the final service learning interview where they got a chance to showcase the projects that they had done over the course of two years. One student called Kabir did a project on being a student swim coach, and how he showed his skills and how it benefited him as a learner. "Swimming coaching taught me to be organized and more confident in talking to other people ''. This was done before the Grade 12's graduated.
Homeroom begins at 8:10am, following the UAE national anthem.
students are considered late if they arrive to class after the anthem.
Monday to Thursday: 3:15pm
Friday: 11:40am
Please arrange for students to be collected promptly after dismissal. Secondary students are not permitted to gather inside the Main Reception or Slices Cafeteria while awaiting collection. They may wait in the adjacent courtyard or the outdoor area at the front of the school, being careful not to block doorways.

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
