Week Twenty Nine - May 10th, 2024
Dear Parents,
This has been a wonderful week, and so great to be on campus throughout!
Everything started superbly on Saturday, with the Spring Fair, and my thanks to our GISPA committee for their organization. I left the event with a much lighter wallet, thanks to the persuasive sales techniques of our entrepreneurial students!
I have been privileged to see some brilliant students of all ages at work this week. The Grade 10 class in the photo are tackling the theme of ‘Ethic Dilemmas’, and developing debating skills to tackle the complexities. I was so impressed by Ms Mariam’s group, particularly as English is their second or even third language! I have been invited back next week to debate with them.
Ms Laurine is right in the middle of the students, with a creative desk arrangement, and we can also see an engaging assembly for Grade 5 moving into Grade 6, in the amphitheatre, delivered by Ms Twinkle and Ms Alisha.
One of my highlights of the week was the incredible work in Arabic by Mark K (G3G). Mark created his own book, which teaches others to learn the seasons in Arabic and vocabulary connected to them. IB education at its best and a proud Ms Hamdi who brought Mark to my office for his commendation from me!
We are always looking to promote GIS and engage with top institutions around the world. As you know, we are the only school in UAE to partner with Embry Riddle, the oldest aeronautical university in the world. Ms Amanda and secondary team have also managed to secure a partnership with the Swiss University for Management and Sustainability (SUMAS). This is very exciting for our students and gives them so much choice. We have been commended again for the number of pathways on offer. This week, I met with representatives from one of the UK’s most famous and prestigious universities, St Andrew’s University in Scotland. This is Prince William’s alma mater and a wonderfully safe location, with just over 2000 undergraduates. Their representatives loved GIS and we shall maintain close links, which will help any GIS applicants in the future.
Finally, as a school dedicated to sustainability, we were delighted that Ms Anrie and her student team of helpers, designers and creators organized the first fashion show of sustainable articles of clothing for Threads of Change. This was fun, informative and innovative – well done to all involved.
Again, as places are filling fast in all year groups, I would urge all families to reserve your child’s seat, if you have not already done so. Please contact our Head of Admissions, Ms Maria, on m.arias_gis@gemsedu.com Those who have re-enrolled are of course given priority for class placements and options choices.
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and efficiency of our school dismissal process, we are implementing some changes that will take effect starting Monday April 22.
The health and safety of all students is paramount, and therefore students cannot remain on school premises after 3.30pm unless supervised by school staff (such as ECAs). We are therefore providing a safe place: the Ground Floor Canteen. Any student waiting for a sibling must now wait in the designated area within the Ground Floor Canteen. We also ask that after 3.30pm any parent who is not engaged in watching squads train at the football pitch, also wait in the designated area of the Ground Floor Canteen.
Thank you for your understanding.
